    Default  Macro filters

Since I am a newbie with not much money has anybody ever used the macro filters versus a real macro lens? I dont have the cash for the lens but could have for the filters. Any issues with them? I have an old set for my 35mm film camera but it's been so long since I used them I cant remember. Seems like the filters would work. I tried to hold them up to my new camera and they seem to work, just the wrong size. School me on these NSOP.

They do work. You can spend a lot of money on them or buy an inexpensive set of diopters (that's what they're called).

Another option would be to use extension tubes. Tubes are a little clunkier but since they have no glass they won't have a negative impact on image quality as some diopters can.

I will probably buy the cheap ones and then save for the real lens. It's just I have the Olympus e-510 and there are not a lot of options on lenses with the 4/3rds system they use. Plus the lenses are expensive.

Oh yeah I have no idea if there are extension tubes for the 4/3rds system.

I think there are but how do they actually work?

an extension tube moves the lens further from the sensor, allowing it to focus on closer objects. How much extension need depends on the focal length of your lens and how close it focuses to begin with.

Modern lenses can be a bit more complicated, but a simple way of focusing closer than infinity is to move all the optics in a lens away from the film or sensor together as a group. Extension tubes just increase that distance they can move. They'll work with any kind of lens though.

Extension tubes are a great option. But they "macro filters" do work, just obviously not as well as a true macro lens.
