    Icon Question  Circular Polarizer Filter.

    Hello NSOP,

I am wondering if there is such thing as a Circular Polarizer that you do not need to turn the filter once it's screwed onto the lens. Kind of like how sunglasses just sit on your face, but for a lens.

    Thanks in advance.

I believe it's called a linear polarizer. But, regardless, it does exist, that just may not be the name.

Want a non spinning circular polarizer or a linear?

I guess I should just tell you guys what I am looking for and we can go from there.

I want something to give my photos a little more saturation as I am shooting. The reason why I dont want the spinning aspect is because I want to take it with me when I am just going out and taking pictures without a tripod. Does that help?

    It doesn't.

What does it have to do with a tripod? You're just confusing us a bit. It'll still suck up a couple of stops, linear or not, that's due to the polarizing effect.

Oh I see. I figured you have to keep the camera still and then twist the filter then take the shot.

Oh, not at all. You can turn it all over the place as you fire the shutter. All the turning does is adjust the amount of polarization, to put it in layman's terms. Hope that helps.

you realize polarizers spin because cameras aren't always level right? Basically, with sunnies it's a pretty good assumption your head will be level 99% of the time, and when it's not you won't care about the polarizing effect being different (I disagree with this as a sailor and don't wear polarized glasses on a boat because my head is ALWAYS cocked, yes they're awesome for the water, but as my head moves it drives me crazy). But for a camera, you take a vertical shot you need it one way, you take a horizontal, you need it the other way. Then you also dial in it's effectiveness. So that's why they rotate.

Linear polarizers spin just like circular polarizers.
