    Default  Eyecups...

    Anyone have a EP-EX15 eyecup?
I'm wondering how well it will work on my 5D?

I'd love to get my big old greasy nose off my LCD. I've read online it will work with the 5D but that it has a magnification factor involved... I've also read it works very well with those optics removed so you're not looking through anything extra...

    $18 and B&H...

I'd also love a bigger "eye cup".

I'm thinking I might just order one of those Ebay jobs. I just want to block all the light out of the viewfinder....
Anyone played with one of those?

I have the Canon anti-fog eyepiece for my EOS 3. It doesn't fit my 1d unfortunately. I've never seen this one before.

I have one on my 20D for the same reason to kind of space my face away from the LCD. The only problem I have had is when I put my camera back in bag the rubber eye piece would pop off. I ended up losing it while on vacation in Maine and ended up buying one of those cheap tear shaped eye cups at Hunts camera and I love it. It blocks out all the light plus it is extended so I don't have to use the Canon piece.

I don't know I didn't save the package it came in and there is no serial# or markings on it but it looks identical to the one in the link.

I have had one on my 20D for about 2 1/2 years now, and it would be one of the first things I would outfit a new body with. Since I wear glasses I found that it made up for the distance that my eye was set back by the lenses.

OK, so now I have a nice rubber eyecup, AND the canon extender...
But the extender has a magnification factor that shrinks everything. It's annoying on my XTi and 1D, not sure on the 5D, but I can't get it out of there. It's between 2 layers of plastic that are screwed together, but the screws are impossible to remove w/o drilling....

If I don't like the look on the 5D, then I'll drill them out, remove it, then glue it back together...

I checked out the extender, didn't like it. I wouldn't want anything to shrink my viewfinder. It also introduces some distortion.

Yeah, already have one... It's great for the TS-Es, and any other time you're on a tripod, but (obviously) sucks for hand held work. It's also a PITA because your body won't fit in a bad with it on, so it's coming on and off all the time.

As we were saying last night. I need to shoot on my tripod and with my TS-Es more.

OK, so here's where I'm at:
I got the EP-EX15 from B&H. With it's magnifier it sucks. It basically shrinks the viewfinder to make it fit because it's 15mm back. But once you remove those bits, it works very very well with (as far as I can tell w/o 2 5Ds) the same view through the viewfinder, only w/o my nose pressed to the screen.

I also picked up 2 rubber eye cups to help "seal" my eye to the finder better. One from Ebay that has a better attachment piece, but the rubber bit sucks. It's very hard and almost plasticky. Then I also picked up the one porschewrx linked to. It has a fantastic rubber cup, but it's attachment part is horrible. It's slightly too wide so as you put it in place you have to line it up. So I swapped the better parts onto one piece and it's better, but the other thing I've realized is that they are designed for the 1.6 crop bodies. The issue it the hole in their attachment portion crops out the corners of the finder... So I'll be hacking one up to see if I can get it to work because I LOVE the bigger rubber cup, but in order to use it right now I have to crop the corners of the finder.... Once I file the part down it should be perfect...

Also if I take the rubber bit and stretch it around the end of the EP-EX15 it works very well, but it won't stay on there... So that's promising that fixing the other bit will work. I just can't imagine having to go to all this trouble to get a good finder. Why can't someone make one? Maybe it's something sell able if I made one?

did you use the ep-ex15 on your xti? would it be beneficial to take out the magnifier while using it with an xti?

I can't use it with it on any of the cameras.
Basically it shrinks the view to "make it fit" but it makes it worthless on the XTi because the already small view gets smaller.... It's fine w/o the optics, and it's very easy to do with a good small Phillips screwdriver.

If you don't like your nose mashed against the rear LCD, spend the $15 and get one. w/o the optics it's very nice IMHO, with them it's crap.

    YMMV
