My goal was to find a bag for daily laptop and photo gear lugging. Before i got into the dslr world, I lugged my lappy and point n shoot around in an awesome pelican 1590 hard case. It lived with me through 3 laptops and about 7 years being thrown around everywhere imaginable. It was a bit heavy, but I never had to be gentle with it. Unfortunately, a bigger pelican wasn't going to work for all the extra gear.
After looking online at various shoulder bags and backpacks (mainly crumpler, naneu, and lowepro) I saw the Naneu Tango out @ the local camera store in black. I was ready to buy, but ended up buying it through B&H because the camera store manager came out from the back when i was ready to check out and nixed the 10% discount the salesman offered me. I apologized to the salesman and just left. I wasn't even asking for a price match, and I was willing to pay almost 30 bucks more out the door.
After living with it for a month, I like the green bag better. Looks a bit tougher, and at first glance, I'm not sure what people make of it. It looks more laptop-baggy than messenger baggy, but I wouldn't guess there was a bunch of photo gear lurking in there. Some degree of stealth was definitely a consideration in my choice, but my girlfriend likes to make fun of me by calling it "the diaper bag"All OTHER opinions on this bag are welcome. To help the stealth factor slightly, I got rid of the useless little bubble compass and the orange naneu badge on the front to make it a little more non-descript.
ANYHOW on with the pics.
I know, I speeled diffuser wrong. i didn't feel like fixing it in photoshop.
Here's a shot of all the crap i carry. This bag is at full capacity with my current gear load, and I'm not planning to add anything to it anytime soon. The only thing I lug around that isn't shown would be a notepad and a few folders I tuck into the pocket that the shoulder-sling folds into.
My main concern in choosing a bag was having enough room for the 70-200 2.8IS i was planning to buy, and it does a fine job with it. The lens sticks up slightly higher than the camera body in the bag, but there is plenty of room to close the bag, and plenty of padding top and bottom to protect everything, especially with the draw-string pockets.
The lappy is well padded and secure in the rear pocket. it seems like it was made with the macbook pro in mind.
The shoulder strap is well padded and has a nice grippy surface on one side. the loops and the clasps are all metal where it attaches to the bag, and it feels very secure.
One feature I really like about this bag is the large front fold-over pocket. you can stuff alotta stuff in there, and it closes by folding over with magnetic clasps. easy to access, and very clever design. There is a nice zip pocket behind it that i use for more flat items like a spiral bound notepad. The smaller front pockets use both velcro and snaps and are hard to open, especially with one hand. I think they're useless, but the bag would look kinda dumb without them.
With regard to the integral shoulder sling, It looks kinda dorky, and I would have still bought the bag without it. If you're lugging a full load any distance though, You will thank Naneu for including the thing. Wow, what a back saver. It of course doesn't distribute the load as well as a good backpack, but it works way better than expected. It's a little awkward stowing it, but it folds out quickly and snaps in with a buckle down on the front edge. The shoulder sling has a length adjustment, and a couple pockets that don't really do anything for me. Again, it would look a bit less hardcore without them.
So there you have it. A month with the bag carrying every day, and I'm overall very happy with my purchase. If you have more lenses, you would absolutely have to look for something bigger, but for daily-duty, this thing is the perfect combination of functionality, compactness, and stealth.
