    Default  Car mount for camera.

OK, figured I'd start this up again...

I'm working on revising my car mount for my WRX. Right now (or should I say as of last summer) it looked like this:

Now that "works" but I have to have the pass through open to use it, and it takes a while to get in/out of the car. You also are VERY cramped (in the back seat) in the car with it setup because it's legs go to the floor...

Anyway, thanks to Distorto, I'm going to HD tonight to buy some flat stock and see what I can do with something like this:

    from:http://www.iwsti.com/forums/showthread.php?t=60066

Now I know whoever does that on IWSTI wants $65 for it, and he's nice enough to include a mount... But yeah, Mine uses a bolt that fits into my tripod head I already have... So I'm going to play around with this tonight and see what I can get working and if I can easily make it removable. I'm concerned that this version sits too far back in the back seat and won't see much more than the backs of the front seats, but I'll test it out and post some pictures when I can. I may also work in my current bars to make it go further forward towards the front seats, but then I run into the legroom issue again.

I'm also going to be trying my tripod in the backseat again, since I now have legs that open up to a ton of different angles making that a possibility again. When I originally did this my legs only opened to one set angle to it was near impossible to get them stable in the back seat.

    my thoughts, exactly!!!

I'm going to try to design mine where it's pushed down onto the top of the seat back to provide additional support. If that doesn't work, it will go forward and use the legs from my old design. I just prefer this back mounting point because it means I don't have to use the pass through.

They claim it works, but I don't want it moving at all...

Yeah, I should be working on mine on Friday night, and if it's not done then, on Saturday. I expect to be playing with it over the weekend.

I'll be sure to post pics of it and with it when I can.
I'll also be trying my new tripod to see if I can wedge it in there somehow.

yeah, so I lost part of my old setup. Thought it was in the shed and cleaned the whole thing out w/o finding it this weekend...

So I just used the tripod in the MINI

New here just noticed this. But I made a pretty kickass mount that works for the gc's- bugeye works great. I'll post up the pics sometime here soon. I liek the one posted on iwsti. But if you take the camera out looks like someone in the back seat would hit their head on the mount. I use a manfrotto mount with suction cupw/ pump on it works great.

I've had a stickypod for years and love it. I found as soon as I had the option, I really enjoyed using lots of different angles. I'd rather drive than build too

OK, so where do you stick it to? Side window? Rear window?
is this the one you have:

I've thought of those but I always wondered if they'd hold a DLSR?
Do you have any pictures of yours setup?

I have the original one with 4 suction cups. I use it for video, not stills, but have attached a bunch of lenses to the camera so it'd be about as heavy as my d80. The device itself can support a ton of weight, the only issue is how tightly you can screw the hinges. You do it by hand with little tabs. If you're trying to support a lot of weight, I'm guessing your fingers wouldn't be able to tighten it enough (assuming you've got it stretched out horizontally, the weakest position)

I've used it attached to every part of the car. To get the shot in your animation, I'd attach it to the back window with a single arm straight toward the dash. Again, this would be the weakest position, but I've been able to do it ... over bumpy/twisty new england roads. I usually put it on the passenger window. I've even put it on the passenger floor pointing up at the driver and it works cuz the base is wide enough (certainly helps to tie it to 2 sides otherwise you'll be putting it back in place after aggressive turning)

No pics of the setups and it's back in NH so I can't go out and take any right now. I wish I could answer with certainly that it would support your camera and a good/heavy lens horizontally but I can't. I could probably have it sent to me and you could try it out if you come up to Acadia.

Yep, all the time. Stupidly, I never used the safety straps, but I didn't have a problem ... never fell off. I filmed at O'Neil's rally school in the winter (cold temps, lots of turns and bumps) and I filmed high speed on tarmac ... always worked great.
