Default  Help me with step down rings and rectangular filter systems...

OK, this is for anyone using a rectangular filter system.

I was really dumb and ordered the wrong parts for adapting my X-Pro Cokin system to all my lenses, and now know what I need, but this thread still has a purpose... For anyone using a rectangular filter system, write down which system you're using, what filters you have for it, and what lenses and camera you are using it on. This will be helpful for others to figure out which size system to go with to cover certain focal lengths.

Here's my old post so you can laugh at me:

The X-Pro appears to be wide enough to cover the 12mm effective FL on my FF camera (holding a filter to the front of the lens works so far)... But I have to figure out how to hold it on there. I got the universal adapter today and will be trying it when I get home tonight to see how it works. Beyond that, I have lenses with 77mm threads (24~70mm, 70~200mm, and the 17~40mm if I ever get one), 72mm threads (45mm TS-E, 24mm TS-E when I get it) and 58mm threads (50mm f1.4, 90mm TS-E). So I'd like the system to work on all my lenses. Now with the giant X-pro system, it has a 77mm adapter (which I have) and a 72mm adapter, but no 58mm setup. So I need a step down ring from 72mm to 58mm. I ordered this from B&H and got it today:

    http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/produc...Ring_Lens.html
but I didn't read the description:
This adapter enables a filter with an attachment size of 58mm to be used with a lens with an attachment size of 72mm.
why on earth would you want to use a 58mm filter on a 72mm lens? Helllllo vignetting?!> Anyway, so I ordered the wrong thing (and did the same on the 77->72mm ring, but they have the right one so I'm ordering that now), but does anyone know where I can get a ring that lets me use a 72mm FILTER on a 58mm LENS?

I'm >< this close to just saying F it, returning the whole X-pro system and going with the Z-Pro as it's a lot cheaper anyway... But I'd really like to be able to use Grad NDs on all my lenses to this might be worth it if I can figure it out...

Anyway, I'm using the Cokin X-Pro System and have the 77mm adapter plate. I also have the universal adapter so it will hopefully work with my Sigma 12~24mm. I'm (going to be) using step up rings to get it to work with my 72mm and 58mm lenses. I have the ND Grad kit (3 filters with varying degrees of ND) and the circular polarizer.

I'd edit this post and bump the thread once I confirm the ability to use the system with the 12~24mm @ 12mm. Holding a ND grad up to the lens at 12mm works, so hopefully I can get the holder to work w/o vignetting...

Step UP rings allow you to attach a larger filter to a smaller lens.

Step down rings allow you to attach a smaller filter to a larger lens. Why anyone would really want to use this is beyond me.

I have one Cokin Z-pro filter (4x6", which I believe is Z pro) which I have used on my 17-40 4L. I need to get the holder system.

OK, so the universal does work with the sigma 12~24mm...
But the CP does not. It's not quite big enough for the insanely wide view the 12mm gives you.Not a huge loss considering CPs would be very strange on such a UWA lens anyway...

As for the GNDs. They work at 15mm for sure. I'm working on making an adapter that can hold the lens better. With the universal, you tighten the screws in from the sides, and if you're not precise you can go a bit more on one side versus the other. That makes it so it vignettes on that side but not the other. I'm thinking I'm going to order the 86mm adapter and play with that on the lens since it's a lot closer to the OD of the hood (the lens cap is 82mm, so the OD of the hood is somewhere around 85mm... This will make it much easier to center the filter holder on the lens.

All in all though, I think I'll stay with the X-pros because I can see they work at 15mm but not more than that... Going down to the Z-pros isn't all that less expensive, and I want to be sure I'm always covered if I get a 17~40mm L...

OK, so the 12mm will work with X-pros at 12mm on FF.
I've found 2 sources that have made workable solutions, so I'm cooking up my own...

But the damn adapter ring I need (95mm) is backordered at B&H. So I checked adorama, they "had it" do I ordered it yesterday. Then this AM I get an email that it's backordered....

So I guess I'll leave it on backorder there and wait since it will probably take the same time from either source.... But I wish adorama's site was accurate. I really feel like calling 2filter.com and seeing if it's in stock there.

Called who? Adorama or 2filter.com? I'm presuming you're talking about 2filter because there's no way in hell adorama picks up the phone.

2filter was amazing for me. i ordered stuff from them 2 days after i placed an order with adorama. 2filter's package arrived in 2 1/2 days (and I'm in the middle of f-ing nowhere right now). I'm still waiting for adorama's mail ... tracker says it was in MA 4 days ago. Hmmm.

And yeah, they really were helpful ... we traded some emails sorting out exactly what I needed.

So I was looking at these today, do any of you mind posting pics of your setups?

I'm in a similar boat that if I'm gonna spend the money on them I'd like them to work with all my current lenses and whatever I'd end up getting.
It looks like you'd need the adapter/holder for your biggest lens, then the rings Ben's talking about, then you just buy the filters that fit the holder size. Is that right?

I've got the P series, which is good for the vast majority of stuff ... but since I plan to get one of those Sigma 12-24's next year I'll probably end up going with a bigger size when I buy some good filters. Right now I'm buying one of everything around $20. I'll spend a year playing with them to find out which I actually use ... then I'll upgrade to a bigger filter system and nicer (glass) filters.

Here's the P series stuff. Adapter ring, holder (with a warming filter in it) and a Cokin grad ND.

And some crappy picks of it on my 18-135 (67mm) lens.

Btw, you may notice there is a UV filter screwed on the end of the lens before the adapter ring. When it's set up like this and I'm at 18mm, I can sometimes see the edge of the holder in the pictures. I could avoid that with a single filter holder or just removing the UV ... but, keep that in mind. Might affect your purchasing decision.

    i use a single holder.

i just found out that the CP for the p-series does not work with the 10-22. you can see the filter at 10mm. it works with the rest of the range, but mine stays at 10mm. i guess it works, but not for me.

i just bought a screw on sunpak and it is also in the way at 10mm.

i saw a thin screw on by quantaray at wolf camera, i am going to try it out.

So can somebody help me out and tell me what exactly I need to buy?

I've got lenses with 52mm, 58mm, and 77mm front rings, so I think I need the step up rings Ben is talking about, but then for a filter holder I want something that will work with my 10-20mm if possible. Sounds like distorto got it figured out but I'm confused.

Here's what I think I'd need if I was just gonna go with the 77mm stuff at first (if I go cokin right away):
    77mm adapter ring
    77mm z-pro adapter holder (should be fine on 1.6 crop @ 10mm)
whatever filters I need (I'm thinking I'd start with soft edge grad ND's @ 2x, 4x, 8x or something. I'm thinking ebay for some cheapies to determine what I actually use.

Assuming its OK to buy knock offs of all the stuff, here's what I see on ebay right now:
    Landscape set - holder, 4 filters - adapter: http://cgi.ebay.com/Filter-Landscape...QQcmdZViewItem
    ND set 2,4,8 - http://cgi.ebay.com/84mm-Neutral-Den...QQcmdZViewItem
I don't see Grad ND's but looking at a couple threads it looks like I can go to 2filter.com

i use a p-series and the cokin square filters work fine. my problem was with the cokin round circular polarizer. it was too thick and would show up in the picture.

i didn't have my sunpak screw on filter tight enough. now that it is tighter, it works fine.

I picked up a cp for my 77mm, but haven't tried it yet on the 10-20. I'm not sure if it'll work out or not, but since i plan on having/getting other lenses with the same front ring size I knew I'd need it anyway.

As for filter purchases - I'm understanding wanting to get the correct stuff/shots in the field with grad ND's or ND's, but can't you just use photoshop or something like that to get the warming effect or the effect of the full color filters? Seems like it'd be a bit more versatile to use digital editing to deal with that stuff to get the colors just how you want them rather than carry around 10 different colors/shades of filters.

The 77mm CP works fine on the 10-20. I use mine all the time on the 10-20 and the 17-55. It's the midrange Hoya CP, not thin or anything. No problems.

    Just FYI.
