That's basically it. The plate attached to the camera can be purchased in a variety of ways. There are custom plates for cameras and lens tripod collars that only fit those particular models of camera or lens, and once you mount them you never remove them.

I use an L bracket on my body, so I can mount it on one of two plates, horizontal or vertical.
