    Default  Inexpensive film scanner?

Is there a decent inexpensive scanner on the market that will focus properly on 35mm negative film?

I know there are plenty of flatbed scanners out there that profess to do 35mm, but that don't have a focus control.

On the flip side, there are a bunch of 35mm slide scanners out there that are designed for that purpose, but tend to be expensive. The cheapest ones are $250+.

Does anyone know of a "commodity" type scanner that does a good job on film?

I'm not familiar with any having any real semblance of decent focus control.

Just send it out to a scanning service. Equipment + hassle means you're better off paying to get it done. I tried scanning large volumes of stuff and its super time consuming and descent gear is $$$.

Scanning film IS time consuming, but when you're just doing it for a hobby it's not TOO bad.

Jason: I bought an Epson 4490 and I'm happy with it. It's $170 at B&H right now, with a $30 mail in rebate. Go to my flickr site and you can see what kind of results I've gotten from it.

Porter, if you haven't already pulled the trigger on this, I have a Minolta Dimage Scan Dual III that was, when originally purchased, considered to be an excellent 'budget' film scanner.

You might be able to score one on eBay for cheap. I'm also going to be selling mine, but I want to first rescan some stuff after finals.

The Minolta? No, 35mm and APS (with optional adapters) only.
