Icon Question  Does anyone carry grey cards?

I have a set of these that I bought years ago:

    http://www.amazon.com/KODAK-Gray-Cards/dp/0879857544

Although I'm damned certain I didn't spend close to $60 for them.

At any rate, I keep the two large 8x10 cards in my big ol' Stealth Reporter bag, and have the smaller 4x5 card in my go-everywhere Tamrac sling bag.

Aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaand I use them almost never.

Have you ever used grey cards? Are they more trouble than they're worth nowadays, what with shooting RAW and/or checking histograms on-the-spot?

I've considered it. I'd like to get the white balance right in the field... that'd be one less variable. I know I can set it to whatever I want in the RAW conversion but that always brings in some subtle changes the exposure when it comes to saturation of various colors.

I carry whi-bal cards in my bag. A big gray card is easy to damage and obviously big and a pain to carry. If I remember to use the Whi-Bal I can fix the white balance in RAW conversion.

That's the advantage to the set I got -- that 4x5 card is small enough to fit into a pocket that's never disturbed/folded over.

And yes, the key thing to having any such card (grey, white-balance, or otherwise) is remembering to use them.

I got a $5 grey card for the hell of it when I ordered my lenses/tripod from B&H, though I've yet to use it

    Don't you have a Stealth Reporter 650AW?

The inside lining is (intentionally) 18% grey.
