Default  My Hi Tech Filters - Help

So, if my holder is turned the slightest bit I see part of the holder on the edges of my images when at the widest focal length 16mm.

Do I need to get the big boy size or what?

What filter system are you using? Is it smaller (like Cokin P) or a Cokin Z equivalent (4" wide)?

Yeah the P size is a no go on full frame with any really wide lens, and I'm sure it could vignette on crop too. How many filter holders do you have set up on the front side? Maybe cut it back by one or two to try to reduce vignetting since it's probably the stacked filter retainers that are showing up in your images.

I am on a crop body. I will post a sample pic.

I wondered if I cut it back, if that would help. I will give that a try. Thanks!

What filter did you use in that shot?

I think it was a 3 stop hard.

It isn't the filter, it is the holder that is leaving the mark.

    I got that part.

Is there a way to modify the filter holder so it sits back further? Or is there a physical issue preventing that?

If the holder has multiple stacking retainers to allow it to hold more filters, moving some to the back* may help (which I suggested in a previous reply). I had to do this with my Z series holder, I think I cut it back to two retainers and that prevented vignetting on my 1D with the 17-40.

*at least for the way the Cokin holders work, a small bolt runs through holes in the holder attached to your lens and holes in the filter retainers. You can remove this bolt and rearrange the holders, putting some on the front side and some on the back side.

I don't think it is made so it can be modified like that. It has 3 filter slots. I can't see myself ever needing to stack 3 grads or one ND and 2 grads, etc...
so I will trim one off and see what happens.

What holder do you have? Are there screws running through the slot-pieces (I've been calling them retainers)?

Oh, they it looks like they shipped me a generic holder. I think a big part of the issue is that it doesn't slide on snug over the adapter ring. Which would probably be why only one side is being picked up in the picture.
Maybe I should get a genuine cokin holder?

No screws, it is generic as ****.

Now that I see what a true holder is supposed to look like I am sure I have a generic piece of crap.

Wow, the Cokin X is huge. Their site says it's usable out to 15mm on a 35mm setup, which I think may be a bit of a fudge. 15mm is damn wide for something like that.

Yeah I'm hoping to stick with the Z-pro when I go full frame. I don't want to have to redo filters, and from what my friends are using it sounds like Z-pro is usually fine to a little below 20mm.

Anybody use one of the cokin glass polarizers that fit into the first slot of the holder?

Is that one of the holders where you can take part of it away but then it will only hold one filter? IE it can hold 2, but the part that holds the second gets in the way?

But I don't know, I rock Cokin X-pros because I needed them for the sigma 12mm on FF. I've got everything I need with them now pretty much (except the 10 stop ND, they don't make one) so I'm too lazy to go back...
    I own this joint!

I think it is, but with this generic piece of crap they sent me, i would have to cut it back. There are no screws.
I will order a genuine Cokin holder.

    Thanks for the help

For what its worth Shawn, I'm using z-pro's on a 10mm sigma on my 40d, and I can't see them.

Are z-pro's the larger size 4x5.5?

With a Canon crop sensor that's somewhere around ~20mm equivalent? Or something?

Canon sensors are 1.6x FOV crop so it's ~16mm equiv.

I've heard of a lot of people cutting the last slot out of the cokin p, so there is just 2 slots to get rid of that problem. I am getting the same thing so I'm going to do that too.

    I think the z-pro's are 4x6, I know at least they're 4".

The sensor is 1.6, so I'm at ~16mm. (like somebody else said)

4 inches wide, by whatever long. I've seen 5-6" long filters.

Yea - I've one of these and it works a treat.

I also cut the front 2 filter slots off to try and avoid vignetting - it still occurs at 20mm.

Maybe one of the Lee holders may work better ?
