Teach me about ND filters |

Hey guys I just recently go a gradated,sp?, nuetral density filter. My question is will I have to shoot in manual and get a reading before putting the filter on? What would happen if I use shutter priority with the filter on? School me guys as I have never had one of these before but I like the pictures I have seen of people using them. You know to not blow out the sky but still get some clarity on other subjects.

I typically shoot with them in Av and just up the exposure compensation as needed to get the exposure I want. Though, about equally as much, I'll get a baseline in Av, then put it in manual to fine-tune the exposure.
All that matters is the final exposure/histogram, it doesn't matter how you get there.
