Default  NSOP "resize, sharpen, and frame for the web" action:

NSOP Web resize and sharpen action.
This is what I use to resize all my images for posting online.
There are 2 different actions here, one for vertical images and one for horizontal images.

    dowload: LINK!

then open photoshop (I'm using CS3, I know it works there, and in CS2).
Open the action pallet: Window -> actions, or press "alt + F9"
in the top corner of that there will be an arrow.
    Click said arrow.
    Choose "Load Actions"
    Find the action you downloaded.
You will then have a "NSOP set" folder listed under actions
Click the drop down arrow and you'll see a "NSOP Vertical" and "NSOP Horizontal" actions.
    Open an image.
Do whatever PP you want to do to it.
    Click on the appropriate version.
Click the little play arrow at the bottom of the actions pallet.
You will then have a 800x??? or ???x800 pixel wide image with our url on the bottom right.

Feel free to change that text to whatever you want. There are a bunch of ways to do that. First start using it, then if you need help with that let me know in here. Also just post if you're having any issues or even if you're just using it in general... This is what I do all my resizing AND sharpening with for online posting. DO NOT SHARPEN YOUR IMAGES BEFORE USING THIS!!! Also this was designed for my 5D, but I've been using it on all files for the resize/sharpen and it's been working fine. See what you think and post up your results. I'd love to see some before/after comparisons with an image you had, then an images done using this.

    Hope you enjoy it!

    Ben

Heh, funny. I just made the same action for myself today.

I've gotta streamline though a bit, its a bit sloppy on my comp.

I'm trying to set up actions for:
    -my basic pp
    -'web sharpening'
    -adding frame

I've got them set, now what I think I can do is do a different action that just runs each of hte 3 actions for different file orientations, but I haven't tried it yet.

I'm bored, so I tried out my basic pp, vs my actions vs. ben's. Ben's does 150% USM, mine is set at 50%, thats the only difference (besides border width). I think it works better with the higher USM, but I wasn't sure what to set it at.

crap, the fonts messed up as it's supposed to come up pretty....
or did you change what it said?

and yes, the sharpening is overdone, on purpose for the web resize. If you look, not only is it at 150 (,1.5,0) it also resizes, then sharpens, then resizes again...

For the lettering, I changed what it said, but it is also like 1/2 off the frame on the vertical.

The overdone sharpening works though. I had followed what you'd listed in another thread to make my action, so I literally made the exact same action with that one exception.

    OK, cool.
I've noticed for lettering the DPI of the image needs to be set at a constant for it to work. IE all my images get imported at 72dpi, but if you're were 300dpi, then the font would be way too small... So we'll see as more people use this, weather or not that works.

OK, I fixed the part that made the text different sizes. Should now work regardless of the default dpi in your PS (it's set to work at 72dpi, this only effects the font size). It also seems to work for 4:3 as well as 2:3 images because I have a few of my MILs Baby shower images open in PS I tried it on as well as one from my sisters site....

I'll go from memory, I'll probably miss something but be close.

I've got 2 web sharpen actions, one for horizontal, one for vertical. They essentially run the same steps.
-I run a "40d option" that I set up that boosts contrast by 10 and does USM @ 150% @1.5pix. I think it has a couple others but the key for the web sharpening is the USM.
-Resize the pic to 1600px (on wide side)
-Sharpen with the Sharpen/Sharpen Filter option
-Resize to 800px (on wide side)
-then makes border (uses resize canvas, text, etc)

Thanks for this script. It's awesome.
Two questions. How do you change the text for good? Or is it something I will have to do manually?
Also, the file that it creates at the end, does it strip the EXIF data? Or maybe I'm doing something along the way that does it.

To make your own text, follow the action in the action, delete the part that makes the text, then hit the 'record' button, then put in text you want, then hit stop.

Then try it to see if it worked.

This won't strip the exif, its probably something you're doing. #1 thing is don't use "Save for Web", use Save As or something like that.

Even though Jay answered I'll clarify it a bit.

    • open the actions palette
    • drop down the arrow to the left of the action so you can see the steps
    • delete the steps that makes the text and the one that moves the text
      • you can also just uncheck the box to the left so it's still there, it just doesn't run w/o the checked box
      • you could also edit these steps, but that's a PITA
    • click on the step that was above the NSOP text step
    • click the record button (red circle at the bottom of the action palette)
    • make your own text layer
    • move the layer to where you want it to be
    • click the stop button (blue square at the bottom of the action button)
    • test run the action and verify it's working correctly
and that's it. It's not too difficult once you get comfortable with actions and how making them works.

Also, does it strip the EXIF data?
the action does not. If you're losing the EXIF it's either before the action is run (typically on import to PS), when you save it (as Jay mentioned, "save for web" strips it, "save as" does not, or when you upload it to your host, some hosts strip it some don't. I'm sure there are other ways to lose it, but those are the 3 I've run into.

Good Luck! Post up your frame once you have it working!!!

Is there a way to get it to put exif data into the name field when you save? Specifically I've been naming my photo a day shots POTD<date>.jpg I want to get the date out of the exif so I dont have to manually name them.

An action that allows conditional application of changed based on exif and other data Uses JS
    http://actionlogic.blogspot.com/

Another action that can rename based on exif
    http://automatoractions.com/files/ph...ctions3.0.html

    Javascript based programable action
    http://www.rags-int-inc.com/PhotoTechStuff/NeatImage/

The JS based ones look like you could point it at a directory and have it run your webframes based on photo orientation automatically and then output the name based on exif.

    yeah, I found this:
    http://photos.ivory.org/psscripts/
and it works to add exif to my images... It does it in it's own way that I don't like, but I can run the script within an action and get what I need from it.... It's working, I just need to figure out what I want displayed and how....

I have a trial version of elements, but elements converts to 8bit. I'd rather keep it in lightroom for that reason unless I absolutely have to switch to PSE. Just can't afford to fork over the cash for CSx.

I just wish there was a way to tell it X pixels from bottom, X pixels from left. I know what those numbers should be, depending on where it starts, presumably top right of pasted layer.

If you put your sig on the bottom left and could tell it where to orient from that, you would always be golden. I'm assuming it orients from top right, so anytime you do a non standard crop etc it does not place it correctly.

It's a bit of a pain, but you can stop the action midway by deactivating various events, then start recording and move it to where you want it. This will fix it so that when you use it in the future it will get moved to where you want it.

I do it both ways and it always goes to the right spot, so it's a problem with your action... My current "sig" is a .psd I open, copy, and move into place. My old one was text that got moved. But you do need to stop the action, then record ALL NEW STEPS then test and retest on new shots to make sure it's working right. It'll work, you just have to figure out which step is wrong, delete it and redo it.

Also, I figured out a way where you don't need a H and V version of the same action PROVIDED you want your text centered.

Me too! Just finished changing up the text on the actions on all 3 computers I use for PP work so it's consistant on all three.

Will be looking around to see what other handy tricks you have for me...Thanks for the great resource!

It's not too difficult once you get comfortable with actions and how making them works.

the action does not.

Good Luck! Post up your frame once you have it working!!!
wow...what a difference. so much easier then what i was doing. Im such a noob with PS and have spent the last hour trying to edit the text to no avail. Will someone please point me to the direction on how to make my own text layer... I've been following Ben's steps above and when it gets to making my own layer im lost... thanks in advance.

    • open PS
    • open pic
    • open actions palette
    • click the drop down before the NSOP sharpen action
    • look for where it says create text
    • uncheck that box, and all the rest of the boxes after it...
    • run the action (it'll run to that point so you have the border but no text
    • click the round circle (like record on a VCR) at the bottom of the action palette
    • make your text
    • move your text
    • click the blue square (like stop on a VCR)
    • click on the NSOP test step
    • delete it
    • recheck the rest of the boxes
    • file -> revert
    • run it from the top with your new steps clicked and all the other steps still there
    that should do it.

FYI, once you've got a handle on this, you CAN write an action that will do it for either orientation AND place your text on there. You do the resize steps using file -> automate -> fit image (then enter 1500x1500 and 758x758 for the correct steps). But placing the text is a GIANT PITA and very trial and error, so you're on your own there.

BEN HEEEEEEEEEEEELLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPP P I did what the thread told me to do. I hit play and it goes through the whole process to canvas size and then tells me that it cannot complete the action due to a programming error. I am using Photoshop 6.0 Thoughts?

Just wondering, does anyone here usually resize their images with "Resample image: Bicubic Sharper"?
