PS Elements problem

Ok, I've run into a problem and it's pissing me the hell off.
I have Photoshop Elements 5 and this is dealing with the database portion of the program.
I've been going through my pics and fixing some of them and when I save it, I save it as a version set. Last night after I finished a pic and saved it as a version set with the original, it came back with an error and now both the original and the modified one have disappeared from the catalog, I can no longer save version sets and the catalog says that the original pic is in the catalog but it won't restore.
I don't want to have to recreate the catalog since it'll take forever to re-tag everything and you can't create version sets without first opening, then saving a pic, i.e. if you have a IMG_112.dng and IMG-112-1.dng, you can't manually make it a version set.
Any idea how to fix this or should I just bite the bullet and spend a day re-doing everything? Maybe I just need to get Lightroom...
