Default  Halp! Lost in a color profile maze

Alright, here's the deal. I work with my RAW images in Nikon Capture NX using sRGB color space as I usually print or post to web. I took some pictures Friday that I'm wanting to share with coworkers and upon saving them out to JPG, the pictures look dramatically different in any other program except Capture NX. This screen cap shows the difference between Capture NX and Gimp, although any other program looked the same.

My wish is that what I see when I'm done editing in Capture NX is what I see in any other program I use to view the picture.

Clearly there is a color profile issue going on here somewhere, but after some experimenting last night, I didn't get anywhere.

    Any ideas?

The only time I've seen that happen is when one of the devices is set to AdobeRGB. I'm sure you've already done it, but triple check that your camera, Capture NX and Gimp are all set to use sRGB. Or, if you've calibrated your monitor try switching back and forth between sRGB and the calibrated color profile in Capture NX to see if that's the cause-it shouldn't be but it's worth a try.

What JPEG settings do you have in-camera? CaptureNX reads the metadata from your camera, and applies saturation/hue/sharpening/color space, etc. settings. In effect, you get a RAW file that looks like your JPG would have, had you shot Jpeg. There aren't many other programs that will read and apply those tags.

In the righthand toolbar on NX, you should have a camera adjustments, or base adjustments bar. Uncheck those, and see if the photo then looks more like what you see in GIMP.

Thanks for the tips guys. I tend to think it's the Base Adjustments issue more than a color profile thing. I'll check that out when I get home from work.

Well, I guess my hopes that it was something simple were too good to be true. There wasn't any base adjustments checked.

Anybody got a good, easy to follow, tutorial on color management? My real desire is to be able to take a RAW image directly out of the camera, edit it and save it as a jpg in Capture NX, and post it to the web or share it with friends. I just want that jpg to look the same in Capture NX, web browsers or any other photo program. I know that seems like a simple request, but I just can't seem to make it happen.

    Thanks,

    Gabe
