2 people on NC have them as well, one from UAE and another from Denmark. The UAE guy is just a rich dude who got his, the Denmark guy might be a pro with a loaner from Nikon. Either way I'm REALLY looking forward to this damn lens.

so I tweeted about wondering when my 24mm might ship...
hellen saw it and commented on it being already shipping but there's a long list?
on dp and fm no one in the states has one, at least not that can upload pics.... (one ritz customer claims to have one)
so I called adorama. There are ~150 preorders. They can't tell me where I am on the list. They can't even tell me if it's been in stock or is in stock today, just that I'm not in a group that's currently shipping today, but they also couldn't say if a group WAS shipping today...

the weird thing is I called and was #1 on the 16-35mm list. I would have thought it's price point would have made it a more popular lens. I ordered the 24mm when they refunded me (and don't know where I am on the list) a few weeks later. I just wonder when I'll get it.....

You could always call to cancel and then reorder so you know where you are on the list.

Bummer! That lens is either really scarce, popular, or both.

You need to upgrade your gear list, I can't remember what you're shooting with anymore.

12-24, 28-75, 70-300 with a 50G that looks like it'll be a sigmalux by the end of the week with any luck...

The 24mm hasn't shipped yet in the US. ONE person in the UAE owns one, ONE in the UK, ONE in Japan and ONE in Denmark. A few other NPS members have pics with them, but no one else. At least that's going by flickr, NC and dp and who can actually post pics. I'm sorry, but if you claim to have bought one from ritz and post a ton about it but can't post pics, yeah, I don't believe you...

still waiting on my 24mm 1.4. I'm fine with waiting if everyone is waiting, but it sounds like adorama got some in 3.21.2010. I was on the 16-35mm VR list from day one, but waiting a few weeks to get my name on the 24mm list only because if they both arrived at the same time w/o me selling something I couldn't cover it. because of that I wasn't at the top of the list (I was #1 on their 16-35mm list) and now I'm stuck waiting. As I said, normally I wouldn't have an issue, but the 16-35VR is already in stock w/o any wait now and the 24mm is trickling out. Is it their stock count year end inventory? That labor strike? I don't know, but they have over 100 people on the list and I just want my damn lens before we go on vacation in a month.

If anyone sees them pop up as in stock somewhere, let me know. I have my name in a few places and email notes anywhere that offers but I'll take any help I can get. Apparently B&H had some for a few hours over the past weekend which I missed.

You can always check in person at B&H and Adorama at the end of April, if all else fails! I don't think they'd turn down Benbacca.

I'm on 6 notify lists now, Adorama, B&H, J&R, Hunts, Jerry's, and pictureline!
and I've called a few other bigger named places that don't do that.

J&R sounds the most promising, they were expecting some the 10th. not sure how many they're expecting though or how many preorders they have...

J&R has 6 on back order and is expecting more than that on their first/next shipment... But their preorder policy is to put a hold on the funds on the card, so if I do that and adorama comes in I'd be ****ED as it'd hit my bank account for the money. so I'm wondering if I should put in the order with J&R and roll the dice on adorama or just wait and see who I get an email from first?

I got my 16-35mm the day they first shipped and returned it the ~4 days later.
the bitch is I waited for them to process the credit before preordering the 24, had I done that I would have had one ~3 weeks ago?

yeah, the 24mm is very strange that way. I'm not sure if all nikons new big (popular) lenses are like this or what, but it seems almost all of the people online posting about the 24mm are either in a foreign country or can't post pics for some reason. The first batch from adorama seemingly went out to a bunch of better known photogs as well making it seem like they (adorama) plays favorites.....

we should see a ton more pics later this week though as the B&H orders should arrive tomorrow to people within 1 days shipping.

it's got WICKED bad barrel distortion.
I sold my 14-24mm because it was massive, and to help fund the 24mm 1.4. So I was hoping the 16-35mm would be at least as good, but it's worse (it's as bad as the 17-35mm actually in that regard, better in others). Yes you can correct it with PS, but the problem is you lose width when you do it. @ 14mm that lens already needed a 4 on the correction slider making it roughly a 15mm EFOV. The 16-35mm needed 6.6 so it's not even 18mm wide once corrected? I shoot so many horizons it's a BIG issue for me and frankly I HATE having to correct all my shots for something like that. So back it went. It's pretty nice otherwise though. I'm now shooting with a 12-24mm sigma which isn't w/o it's own issues, but it's barrel distortion is no worse than the nikkon 14-24mm and it's wider, smaller and CHEAP!!! The 14-24mm is the nikkor to have though, if you don't mind it's size, weight or cost. The issue with it's size is it's VERY thick making it hard to fit into a lot of the slimmer bags. It's also another "no filter" lens, but there are walk arounds for that (I had filters for mine). If I go back to a nikkor it'll be for the 14-24mm but only time will tell.

I guess for what I shoot the barrel distortion doesn't really affect me. When I'm shooting indoor(architectural) work I'm typically around 24 anyway.

so I have ~9 email notifications submitted for this thing as well as having one on order at adorama (but far enough down the list I missed last weekends order).... I also have every online store I know of that lists stock online that I check every day....

Calumet Chicago is listed as having them "in stock" today, but I called and they've got "a couple of dozen" backorders still and they've already filled 8 orders. He said he didn't know if those 8 were it and to call back, but WTF, why are these so hard to get where the 16-35VR is sitting on shelves? I would have thought the price on this would have made it less likely to be hard to get?

Nikon already makes a 17-35mm f/2.8 and a 14-24mm f/2.8. The 16-35mm f/4 VR is essentially a cheaper alternative to an existing lens, and as you discovered, it has a significant amount of distortion, so the demand isn't going to be huge.

The 24mm f/1.4, on the other hand, is the first lens of its kind that Nikon has made in years (a fast wide prime), to the point where the old 28mm f/1.4 was selling for $3-4k used, so this is wider, cheaper, newer, and better. Hmm. I wonder why it's damn near impossible to get...

the 16-35mm went from back ordered to in stock in ONE shipments. This happened before ANYONE could get a review up/out. The first 24mm shipment as in March... There has been at least one more since then. But still, they're backordered weeks later. To me this hints at either a much different supply or demand scenario (or both) and with the price difference that surprises me. I didn't think of the replacing an existing lens (or two) part though, good point.

If you do some research on byThom.com, you'll find that this is not a new phenomenon with Nikon... historically, they've consistently underdelivered products and underestimated demand for lenses like this one. They have just reorganized their board a bit, but they're a pretty conservative company... seems like they could learn a thing or two from Apple about delivering on promises.

I just need to learn to put ANYTHING they announce on a CC as soon as it's available to order. Had I done that I would have had one a month ago (they shipped the first batch March 20th). I didn't do that just in case they shipped both at the same time and I hadn't reordered my lineup in time, it would have taken money from our personal account... That still would have been OK because I could have covered it for the day or two it took to sell something, but yeah...

They, for whatever reason, I didn't check my email 2 weekends ago when B&H got their first shipment and I had/have the money sitting in my photo account.

now, I have ~9 email confirms in with a bunch of places, and I have push notifications setup on my phone and it set to vibrate, so I'm constantly checking my emails, nothing yet.... I just really want it for vacation is all, otherwise I could give a ****. The other options are to buy a sigma 24mm for the trip then return/sell it, or rent the nikkor from our affiliate. I need to call them and see how reserving it works because I started that at work and didn't see where I reserved a date, it's $150 for 10 days which I'd gladly do for our trip....

so do a BUNCH of other well known bloggers that shoot Nikon though, so I'm not surprised, I'm pretty sure they get to cut the line so reviews come out faster....

    anyway, what watch is this?

so, JRs got some in last week... Had I placed my order with them I would have had it last weekend, but they take the full amount on you card when you place an order so I didn't thinking it might **** up my adorama order. I guess enough people didn't care about that that they did it as their shipment didn't ever hit "in stock" status meaning they received less than they had orders for. When I called them ~2 weeks ago they had ZERO backorders.

    ****!

I just wish B&H or one of the other no backorder places would get them already. It's getting pretty tight in terms of me getting one for vacation, and borrow lenses won't have theirs in time to rent it either.
