    Default  stained glass

this was one of those photos that I probably would have walked right by, if something hadn't happened to make me re-look .. as it happens my left hip is pretty gimp, and prone to popping out of its socket with no warning, especially if I make use of the full range of motion usually afforded by a ball and socket type joint So I was hiking along a canyon, and as I swung my leg over a fallen tree, it popped out right as I brought my leg down - instant paralyzing pain! Anyway, as I'm digging my fingernails into the tree to avoid completely falling over, and staring into the sky waiting for the pain to pass I happened to look through this cluster of old branches and thought to myself that it really looked like a stained glass church window! sort of!

anyway maybe it's just me, but I liked the perspective that the moment brought and I might head back there when the sky is being more spectacular at some point

Also I hope this looks ok It's completely different for me from my mac to the dell monitor and I'm not sure which one I trust more. The sky was a nice deep blue with pink clouds, and on this computer it looks grayer with no pink at all!
edit: changed image to the right colorspace!

Yeah, no pink here, but still I love it! Especially with the backstory.

thanks! the color thing is really bothering me, though. I know that the mac will display images in a browser differently (something about 1.8 vs 2.2 gamma.. I'm still trying to understand it) but it's like I'm losing color on upload I took a screenshot of the photoshop file (jpg) and the same image after it's been uploaded next to it - why did it get washed out? And more importantly when I uploaded the screenshot, why does it look right? Man I'm confused.

You think you're confused, my head just asploded! Usually I have an idea of why things happen in the computer world, but this has me stumped. Maybe because you're using a Mac ?

what color space are you shooting in?
If you're not in SRGB and you don't convert it yourself in PS then you'll lose a bunch of you color on the web conversion.

I doubled-checked to be absolutely sure a gremlin hadn't touched my camera - shot in sRBG, yah.

In PS (cs3) Image -> mode -> RBG Color

Colorspaces frighten and confuse me, so I really try not to mess with them

OK! I think I know what happened I was starting over from scratch and when I opened the CR2 in PS, and it gave me the RAW importer window (whatever you call it) I just happened to look at the bottom of the image and what looks like an innocent line of text said Adobe RGB (1998) So I clicked on that and discovered my Workflow options.

.... In my defense I've only had cs3 for a very short while now upgrading from 7 so I don't know it very well

So, what settings should I have there? I changed space to sRGB of course, depth - is 8 bits/channel what I want? size as default and resolution is set at 240 px/in

and yeah I think that's how I wanted it to look. whew that was a battle

yep, that's your issue, the RAW converter turned it into Adobe RGB, then I'd bet you didn't flip it back before saving, ULing and posting...

Color spaces are a pita, but FYI your in camera settings don't mean a damn thing unless you shoot JPEGs. If you're shooting RAW it's all determined when you process them in the CPU.

    oh! wacky.

Assuming my interests lie mainly in preparing images for the web (i.e. I don't really print them) is there any reason to not just always use sRGB? And if I was going to print something out, would it be in my best interest to use something different? (hint: future tutorial )

oh it's on the tutorial list for sure.
Yeah, web use 100% RGB, occasional printing, 100% RGB is you are going to be printing crap loads of stuff, then consider Adobe RGB, but honestly I'll have to print something both ways to see if there is any noticeable difference.
