Well I broke down and picked up a Nikon d40.

My first two shots + lightroom 'development':

how do you like the d40? Do you miss the lcd display information on the top of the camera, or is the info being displayed on the back lcd sufficient?

Nothing to miss as this is my first SLR since a minolta 7000 back in the 80s

So far I really dig it. The info button by the shutter release turns on the info screen (natural place for it IMO). Works for me.

    That's cool I guess it's whatever you're used to.

The bigger screen must be nice!

Yes I like the screen size a lot.

The real test will be this weekend. Will be taking photos of a rugby tournament all weekend.

I've played around with a D40 and they are very nice. It was before I had my XTi so I can't directly compare them, but beyond the nikon/canon fundamental differences (IE I had no clue what some buttons did) it's very nice. After owning my XTI I might even say the D40 is better, but I'd have to play with them side by side again.

As for the shots, you appear to have blown out your highlights... Is that in the treatment or in camera?

I've used the Rebels and the D40s, for the sensor and overall quality of camera, I've always preferred the Canon over the D40.
