    Default  Hummer in my backyard!

Hummingbirds finally found my new feeder.(the old plastic one was too ugly, I thought it detracted from the pictures) I took a bunch of pictures yesterday, but only ended up with a couple keepers (barely). My AF hates these little guys.

Hopefully more to follow. I'm gonna try for more today. I really need to get some more strobes.

Your girlfriend gave you a what?

    :P

Nice feeder, and pics. I bet you'll get better, too. Forget AF - set your DOF a little deeper (dunno, f/6-f/8, to still maintain that nice bokeh you have), pre-focus for the feeder, and voila!, relatively easy hummingbird shots. You could go a few steps further, and set up a photo gate to trigger your camera when the birds are within focal range, but that might be overkill.

Make sure you mix your own nectar 4:1 water to sugar and boil it. Don't add food coloring.

I actually mixed it 3:1 to initially atract them. It went unused for a few weeks, so I thought maybe it was my mixture. Seemed to help.

I'll definitely try prefocus, and open up the DOF a little more to help with focus. These were almost wide open.

I may try a remote, since when I notice them, they fly away when I come close enough to take photos. Waiting, is how I got the ones I got, but that sucks in 100 degree heat.

The only disadvantage to the remote theory is that the IR receiver on the D50 is located on the front of the camera, so if you've got the cam on a tripod close the window it will be hard to get the camera to see the remote if you're sitting somewhere behind it.

That's a big run on sentence

I've had 50/50 luck with bouncing the IR remote off something white, but it does work.

Yes, but as usual, they lack the focus I require, and are definitely nothing spectacular. Also, few and far between, FTL.
