Man, I don't have time any more to get sucked into Nasioc, can you give us some background on this shot? Like what are you doing in Africa??
Nice capture, he kinda looks like you caught him by surprise.

Re: Lion, Botswana |
Technical junk :
500mm f4 IS hand held @ 1/60th second - was struggling for Depth of field - the nose is a little soft but it doesn't detract from the image IMHO.
Other crap :
Vacataion in Botswana last week - he's a big old male of the Savuti pride that specialize in taking down elephants - they'd killed a young elephant during the night and where sleeping off dinner. I interupted his snooze by poking a big lens in his general direction.
Plenty more to come from the trip if anyone is interested.

Same, I'd love to go to Africa, and have checked out some photo safari vacations (might try to go next year, if I can find a good deal with a reputable company).Originally Posted by LateApex

More from the trip - I really haven't had time to get much done due to work.
How come when you take vacation they don't reassign your workload - just pile it on your desk ?![]()

Re: Lion, Botswana |
5D is the answer - but really equipment isn't that relevant - it's just a tool IMHO - I suspect the images would have come out almost identical (ignoring the crop difference) on a 20D or Nikon for that matter.
Although to be fair the camera body matters a lot more than it used to ,when it simply open and closed the shutter - so the old adage of the body is just a box isn't quite true in the digital age.
Thanks for the comments.
Oh and 500mm was quite close enough - I was within about 15-20 ft of him - and should he get the urge he can cover 100 meters in < 4 seconds. You also don't get the chance to scream as he kills by suffocation. He was around 450-500lbs I'd say.
I sure as hell wasn't about to spill his pint.![]()

Re: Lion, Botswana |
I agree completely to a point, but the reason I was asking was the slight vignetting in the corners of these last few (landscape) shots:Originally Posted by uncle_git

but it just comes out that it was a FF camera so that's why I asked. I know some Nikonians love to diss the fact the FF sensors vignette, but I actually like it as it gives the photos something I felt they were lacking (for me) from my smaller sensors... You can easily remove it either in PS or by stopping down so it's no big deal, but I noticed it and asked.

Re: Lion, Botswana |
I think that's more to do with the lens used - all the images linked are with a 24-105 IS L - a lens to be honest I really wasn't that impressed with - there is pretty heavy barrel distortion present at the wide end.
I'm probably going to pick up a 17-40L instead (The 24-105 was a rental)
Why not the 16-35 2.8 ?
I don't need the speed or the weight.
If people really don't like the vignetting it's *really* trivial to remove it in light room - heck I get it on my 75mm on the 4X5 Ebony MUCH worse than this![]()

Re: Lion, Botswana |
Actually now you mention it the 24-70 may be a better choice for me.
I have the 20-35 at the moment and although I shoot at 20mm sometimes - I find I'm just not happy with the results. Could be the photographer at fault - maybe I'm just not a fan of the UWA look.
