I have soooo many shots of the bridge from that same spot.... That's from the goat island bridge, or at least the little pullout right before you get there. Here's where I took mine.

that used to be on my way home (I drove over that bridge every day for 3 years)... Well the bridge was, I had to detour ~2 minutes to get to where I'd shoot from, but that's why I have so many shots from there...

Anyway, once in town, drive down thames and take a right to get to here.
    for this shot:

then do ocean drive out to Castle Hill for this guy (you can drive right in to what is a restaurant. Park and walk south, away from the building):

(I cheated and went by boat )

and out to Brenton Point for this one:

I grew up in Jamestown (the other side of the bridge) was married in Newport, and my wife is from Portsmouth (the north end of the island). We also lived in Newport for the first 2.5 years we were married, and I keep my boat there in the summer, so I'm down there all the damn time. FYI, the bridge is a $2 toll, or 11 tokens/$10. They're getting easy pass in 2009 though. Ask me anything you want to know. If I don't know it, Matt will, or I can easily find out. The restaurant Matt showed you is the Brick Alley Pub. Have the Lobster Bisque.

Newport has no shortage of very good restaurants to go along with the spectacular views. It also has the highest proportion of BYOB's in the State of RI. The significance of this is that with an average restaurant markup of 300% of cost, you are left with more money for new gear!

Yep. When my wife and I first got married that was the only way we could afford to go out. I can't remember the name of the place but it was on broadway just before the police station. It was also right next to a liquor store. Their food was cheap (think dinner for 2 for $10~$15) and great. We walk down, grab a 6er and go in. They were supposed to have an "opening" charge, but the easy way around that is we were always sure to leave what we didn't drink. They always remembered us, we'd get killer service and they were super nice.

    I LOVE BYOB restaurants.

FYI the reason they have them is because there is a set # of liquor licenses for the town. They're "sold out" but people still want to open restaurants. So they start as BYOB and try to earn the license. It's a waiting list ordeal. A few places will stay BYOB because they know a lot of people like it, but most eventually get a license.
