    Default  Long Island

I'm going to be staying at my friend's house in Long Island for two nights before flying over to Asia. He's gotta work on Friday, so I figured I might want to go around exploring a bit, and maybe shoot shooting if I find a nice spot on a beach or a bay. I've been scouting locations with Google Maps, but I have no idea if I'd be able to get to those places.

Say I find a place like this on google maps. It'd be a nice place to shoot a sunset, but I see a lot of mansions there. If you go east a bit, there's a road called Landing Road that goes right to the beach. Are there public access rights to beaches on Long Island? In other words, if I drove down Landing Road and parked my car somewhere out of the way, would I be able to walk up the beach behind all the mansions?

The one thing I loved about Hawaii is that all beaches were public property, and you had the right to go on any of them, even if they're in front of fancy resorts or someone's house. They don't have to make it super easy to get to, (they might provide 8-10 public parking spaces and make you walk down a long trail), but if you can get to it, they can't throw you off of it.

Well anyways, did you find a spot to get some shots at all?

afaik, in ALL states, you can slap on a set of waders at low tide and walk anywhere below that low tide mark all you want.

in MOST states, that demarc line actually extends up to the high tide mark, meaning you can walk on the beach.

the space of beach/coast between those two lines is the "wet sand" or "intertidal" area. in MA for example that area is NOT public domain, but in CA it IS.

    iunno about RI and NY.

Same applies on Long Island. The map linked in the first post is of a public rd leading to a public beach on the north fork of Long Island. Most of the beaches on the north fork are public but the majority are small and have limited access (a small opening on a small street). The catch is that if you want to drive your car to most of these smaller beaches you need a town resident parking permit to park on the street, this is to prevent these small streets from being overcrowded by parked cars of out of towners. There are still numerous large beaches in the area with public parking (some for a fee, some for free). When you go to the south fork all bets are off, that is Hamptons territory (read: snotty, stuck up, egotistical, better than you, nimby, etc etc), they go out of their way to keep the beaches to themselves.

^ in RI it's "mean high tide" and BELOW are fair game, but you have to have a public access to get onto it. As long as you've gotten onto it legally, you can walk right past most people's houses at low tide. But certain people *cough* governor sundlen *cough* have the beaches near their houses marked as piping plover nesting areas to block you from accessing ANY of it.
