Default  Sick of the same places...

Well, every time its nice out, I seem to shoot the same places over and over... All in all Im pretty sick of it. So I was hoping some of you guys near my location(Whitman,MA) could help me out! Looking for no more than an hour drive tops.

    Places I constantly shoot:
    Plymouth waterfront
    Boston (Faneuil hall area/newbury street)
    All of my town
    Braintree
    Roger Williams park zoo

    Thanks for looking/helping!

Totally know your feeling... just have to expand your horizons, and pay more attention to local events as well. There's always funky stuff going on that could make a decent shot.

Harvard? MIT? Walk around the Charles? Boats? Chelsea (but be careful). I'm giving you an outsider perspective--I can't imagine being in a city like Boston and not being able to find something/somewhere to shoot. If you're not sure, just wander around somewhere in some good light.

What an insightful post! You managed to name 0 of the 1,000,000 places!

One thing you can try to do is type into Google Image Search or Flickr places near boston, or just something like Mass, and see what people have taken pictures. If something looks good, maybe they will have more of a description as to where it is. I think google and flickr are good ways to find good spots in areas you may be unfamiliar with, or when you are trying to find something new.

What do you want to shoot?

Do you want to photo walk or do you want to get specific shots? Search flickr, find spots that interest you, do some research. Go shoot.

I can give you an area, but just because it interests me doesn't mean it'll interest you.

Evrytime I fly into Boston over all the little islands it makes me want to go check out all the old army installments. Im fairly sure there are ferries to get out there. If you ever want to go, let me know and we can explore together.

Peddocks is currently closed for construction.. that was the one I was really hoping to go out to. Says it will be closed 2010-2011. The rest are ok, just make sure you bring a tripod.

from what I've seen there are quite a few cool places (not army installments) that you can get to from some of the beaches and parks too?

Dude, its a large city, just walk around in a new area your bound to find something? If your tired of shooting at those two places, go someplace else?! Its seems pretty simple to me. Some of the places he named are from Boston to RI, if you are giving yourself that much range, go explore a bit sometime. If he specified what he was looking to shoot it might be easier to narrow down.

Yeh they all look cool. There is a little tiny lighthouse on it's own tiny rock that would be awesome to shoot in a storm. Just gotta figure out how to get somewhere to see it.

There are definitely some decent looking spots around th though. I would love to take some models out there with some crazy 18th century outfits or something. No doubt you would need permission from the parks service though . I miss NZ for this... Not only are the trespass laws nice, in that you can trespass until you ares asked to leave. Ha ha, but in a public place you can do anything that is not illegal...

As we've discussed before, Boston is the complete OPPOSITE. You're basically always under the watchful eye if you have a camera. You need a permit to shoot at city hall, not shooting city hall, just shooting at city hall. **** you Boston.

Yeh, it's crazy here! I was told by a cop i couldn't shoot the sunset with my tripod at a small park on the water without permission??? (until I started talking, then he thought i was just a tourist from from Australia, which he had always wanted to visit :/ )

    It really is crazy.

    excellent project ideas!

as for places to look for, consider:
    fairs
    farmers markets
competitions (a place here just had their monthly latte art barista competition)
    car shows
    modelmayhem.com

A personal project like this would be great to give some "purpose" to shooting seemingly random things. Another thing is to look for a local photography group on meetup.com or the likes. We have monthly outings at least once a month which gives great variety of shooting throughout the year. I can't imagine a lack of subjects within 30 minutes of Boston. My biggest hurdle is getting "alone time" to go shoot something with intent which is frustrating me.

Try to find local city/state parks or public/conservation land with trails. I recently found several within 5 miles of my home.

I just got back from my neighborhood dog park. I'm a dog guy and I was mostly going for snapshots of my own dog. It occurred to me though that if I went there without my own dog and just shot for an hour or two I could get some uh-mazing shots. Definitely motivating for me. Loads of cute girls too. Hand out your card and comp free pics, or something like that.
