Default  Mt Haystack (w/ Mt Marcy views) - Adirondacks, NY

Been hiding out in the mountains of NY for the past few days. The weather hasn't been cooperating, but we were able to summit Haystack and get a few minutes of sun while up there. It's right next to Mt Marcy, the tallest mountain in NY.

Just above the tree line on Little Haystack, looking at Marcy in the clouds:

Looking up toward the peak of Haystack:

Looking back at Marcy as the clouds briefly lifted:

    Cool,

Me and a friend are going to summit Marcy in July sometime. You gave me some idea's though. Nice to see the views are great due to being above treeline. What set of trail books are you using? I am probably going to get the ADK mountain club books, but there are like 7 of them. I already have book six I think.

Did you day hike, or camp. If you camped did you wilderness camp, or hike back to lean-to, and what ones. Also if at a lean-to how many other hikers were there that night. Did you start at Heart Lake? I am looking at starting at Heart, and probably camping one night, using either lean to or just camping off trail. When did you go? I am looking at mid-July

My friend had an old book that gave us the idea then I just browsed online to get trail and camping info. We parked at the Garden in Keene Valley. We hiked 7 miles in to the Slant Rock lean-to on the first day. We brought a tent, but there is a lean-to about 0.2 miles from Slant Rock though the sign is now missing. (if you want to use it take the trail striaght ahead of you when standing at Slant Rock with the rock on your left). Day 2 we hiked 2 miles to the summit in the morning and chilled up there for a bit since the weather finally cleared. As the clouds started coming back in we descended. It began pouring rain almost immediately so when we got back to Slant Rock we packed up the tent and went all the way back down to the car.

The photos belie the weather we had ... it was awful all but 1/2 hour. We only saw about 8 other people which we heard was typical of that hike and had nothing to do with the weather. Since Marcy is right next door everybody goes up there instead.

BTW, bear containers are required. We thought we could hang a bear bag but it's not allowed anymore. Had to make a quick trip out to town to rent one. ($2 at The Mountaineer)

Thanks for all the info. I think we are going to start up at Heart Lake, and move south. It is about 5.5-6.0 miles as the crow flies. I figure we summit the first day, and hike out on the second, staying at a lean to on the first night. I see there is a lot of Lean to's so that is good. Better than the Catskills where they are much more spread out.

Just got back from Marcy last weekend. Man what a hike. 16 miles in one day with packs and a 5300' Mt. is a haul. I will start another thread, and post up my stuff, when I get it all processed.

Ouch. I just got winded going up a flight of stairs carrying only an english muffin. I think my hiking days are numbered.

Looking forward to seeing your pics.
