    Default  Should I sell it?

This is actually a "What to sell?" question but anyways...

    Current:
    I have a 30D and 350D. My primary lens is a Sigma 17-70, which I absolutely love.

    Near Future:
I'll have a 5D and 350D. My primary lens will be a Canon 17-40, which I hope I will have.

My dilemma, I don't want to sell the 17-70 but the more I look at it, the more I should. I mean, I'm going to rarely, if ever, actually use it on the Rebel XT and it doesn't work on the 5D. So, yeah, I guess I just needed to write this out to make myself realize it.

Anyone think of any reason why I shouldn't sell it? I could also use the $275 or so I could sell it for right now.

    - Scott

Id say sell it... you tend to be at the wide end anyways... the 17-40 has that covered and works on both bodies.

Sell it! There's really no need, & ditto to what Matt said.

Thanks, guys. I guess there was really not much point to this thread, I just wanted confirmation. If anyone wants an awesome copy of the 17-70, keep an eye on the For Sale forum!

I should've just set up a package deal for everything you're selling. I'd like that 17-70 but I'm gonna hold off for a bit.

I'm thinking I may go for the 17-40 eventually anyway as my first L.

I wouldn't bother with a 17-40 unless you're going FF. That's the ONLY reason I have one now. Seriously.

I'm like 6-12 months away, but I think the choice will be the 24-70 f/2.8 or ??

This 28-135 that came with the 40d is a pretty decent lens though and should work well for me I think.

The draw is strong for the 24-70 other than everything I hear about it being heavy.

Yeah, it just depends on what you like to shoot... 24mm wouldn't work for me, it'd be about the same as 17mm on my crop sensor which isn't quite wide enough for me. But if you don't shoot so many landscapes, the speed of the 24-70 would absolutely sell me on it.

Yeah for me it's like a completely useless zoom range (see my for sale threads). I have a 50 1.4, and beyond that I have zooms for wide and tele and thats really where I spend most of my time shooting. The 24-70 2.8 is supposed to be great, but it's big. I'd get the 24-105 4L IS if I wanted something in that range I think.

The sigma 10-20 fits the wide angle gap for me though, actually a 17mm is more overlap than I'd need, i think I'd miss the 40+ more than I'd miss the 20-24 range.

If you don't shoot wide, then 24 is maybe enough. The difference between 20 and 24 is fairly large though.

I see you have the kit lens, so go from there and figure out what focal lengths you use the most.

Jay, don't get the 17-40mm unless you're going FF, case closed.

Scott, sell the 17-70mm. The only DC/EF-S/1.6 specific lens I'd ever keep is a 10-2x if you had and or needed one. Otherwise the FF lenses will work, they're just bigger for the same optics.

May I ask what is "FF" in reference to the Canon 17-40mm lens?

    Thanks!

FF means full frame as in 24x36mm sized sensors found in the 5D and 1Ds series.

I agree the 17-40 would be an awkward lens on a smaller crop sensor (1.6x) like in the Rebels or 20D, 30D, 40D etc. It works quite well on the 1.3x sensor like my 1D MK II though.

Wow, You saved me a bunch of $$$'s down the road as I've read reviews over the net how great this lens is, ...but as I've learned just now not right for my XTi rig...

    Thanks a bunch!

Roland, how did I save you money? The 17-70 is probably my favorite lens that I have EVER owned. It's fantastic for the price. It's absolutely perfect for a crop sensor (XTi). Unless you're planning on jumping to a FF ($$$) body soon, I would certainly take the 17-70 over the 17-40 L.

    Scott,

My next lens I had my eyes seriously on was the 17-40 L but due to this thread I learned that the Sigma 17-70 is rock solid for my XTi with its 1.6 crop vs. a big body FF camera which would allow the 17-40 L to shine...

This is what I'm understanding you folks are talking about once emorphien answered my FF question...

    Am I correct?

Absolutely. I was just afraid I'd given you the opposite impression and you were now buying the 17-40 OVER the 17-70 which wouldn't wise in my opinion.

There's a lens test floating around where I matched the 17-70 against the 17-40 L when I owned both simultaneously. It should be in the Lenses forum.

    Great!

I'll go and check it out right now!

BTW, its really TOUGH waiting for my equipment to arrive from B & H...But, its sure allowing me to be a lot more prepared as I'm learning a lot here from all of you! With your folks help here on this forum I've been able to comprehend things alot easier had I only the XTi Manual and ole lonesome me...I've been able to conclude that I would like to start shooting in Av MODE for most of my photos...Being able to control DOF is important for me in shooting Landscapes & Wildlife, from one end of the spectrum to the other...I'm UNDERSTANDING Aperture & Shutter speed & DOF okay, but still a little hazy in its relationship to ISO...Stopping down this one and knocking-up the other kind of stuff...It just might be my comprehension due to INFORMATION OVERLOAD for the past few days reading/learning 24/7 while I got some time on my hands...Its all GOOD to me and I'm really fascinated about this new hobby...

Its become a PASSIONATE OBSESSION in a blink of an eye!

ISO is a weird one. Post up a separate thread if you can't find the answers you need after searching. I'm trying to remember if we've talked about it but I don't know. I think we probably have.
