ok, so i'm laying out some options for myself.
take a few things as a given...
body will be rebel xt. i don't want the included kit lens at all, even if it's only a few bucks.
already have an old canon lens from my 35mm days, an EF 35-135mm f3.5-4.5 AFD Wide-Tele Zoom. converted to the aps-c sized sensor, that nets me a 56-216mm eff. a nice "normal-tele" range. it's held up quite remarkably well over the 17 years i've had it.
so here are some lenses, ranked in order of $$$, along with some reasoning as to why i've concentrated on them. numbers in brackets are the "effective" focal length:
$75 -- Canon Normal EF 50mm f/1.8 II Autofocus Lens [80mm]
seems to be absolutely fantastic bang for the buck. fast. cropped sensor makes it a bit portraity.
$180 -- Canon EF-S 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 IS Auto Focus Lens [28.8-88mm]
the "+1" version of the kit lens, supposedly better optics and includes the IS. the slowest of the lenses i'm considering, especially zoomed in. covers a very useful range, and includes IS. can only be used on cropped sensors.
$230 -- Canon EF 50mm f/2.5 Compact Macro Standard AutoFocus Lens - Gray Market [80mm]
i've heard this little guy is a very good overall performer, especially wrt IQ, physically built better than the 50/1.8, even if a little slower. not the tightest macro but good for about .5x. suffers the same "portrait" field of view with the cropped sensor.
$285 -- Canon 50mm f/1.4 USM Autofocus Lens [80mm]
the "+1" version of the 50/1.8. includes USM which is quiet and quick. although it's a faster lens, it's also quite a bit more expensive than the 50/1.8.
$300 (used) -- Canon Wide Angle EF 28mm f/1.8 USM Autofocus [45mm]
the unused version runs about $100 more. i like the "normal" field of view on the cropped sensor. USM is quiet and quick. 1.8 is pretty fast.
$320 -- Sigma 30mm f/1.4 EX DC HSM AutoFocus Wide Angle Lens [48mm]
another "normal" lens for a cropped sensor. slightly narrower and faster than the canon. much cheaper than a new canon. unknown aspect of sigma quality?
$375 -- Tamron SP AF 17-50/2.8 DI II LD ASPHERICAL IF MACRO WIDE-ANGLE TELEPHOTO ZOOM [26-78mm]
seems to be another big bang for the buck type lens. pretty fast, constant aperture across focal lengths, covers approximately the same zoom range as the kit lens but has the aperture advantage. lots of folks stack the IQ up against the canon 17-55/2.8 but not the durability/construction.
$400 -- Sigma Zoom Super Wide Angle AF 17-70mm f/2.8-4.5 DC Macro Autofocus Lens [26-112mm]
longer reach than the above tamron, comes up a lot in lens discussions. tamron SEEMS to have the IQ advantage from what i've read? both sig and tam do not seem to have the same consistency as canon in any event. longer reach may be moot since i do have another much taller lens at my disposal. varying aperture wrt zoom.
$900 (refurb) -- Canon EF-S 17-55mm f/2.8 IS USM Ultra Wide Angle Zoom Lens [26-88mm]
i just threw it in there because it's a spoiler. IS, USM, constant aperture, pretty fast... only works on crops though. doesn't matter because it's out of the price range.
so does anyone out there have 1st hand experience with some of these lenses? even better, some experience across a couple of them so that they can compare?
i am not afraid of prime lenses. my father still thinks zooms suck.i find i don't use the zoom very much at all. however i'm not going to get JUST a prime as a 1 and only... too limiting. so i might go with either one of the more expensive zooms, or perhaps a less expensive zoom and a cheap prime, or something like that. not going to go with a cheap zoom!
