Default  What else do I 'need' ?

I feel like living up to this country's expectations and being a consumerist whore today. I've already ordered a Copperhill sensor cleaning kit, a set of frames for my NSOP photo exchange collection, and I'm going to hit 'submit order' from B&H sometime tonight. You have until then to remind me what I'm forgetting to put in my cart.

    Right now it's:

Canon USA Fisheye EF 15mm f/2.8 Autofocus Lens

Acratech Ultimate Ballhead without Quick Release, with Left Rubber Main Knob & ...

Canon Eyecup EF for Digital Rebel Series; Rebel Ti, T2 & K2

Acratech Double Axis Spirit Level (Bubble Level) - Clear

The eyecup is to replace the one for my Rebel that grew legs and moved onto a happier home somewhere far far away from my camera, and the dual level is to make sure that I never ever aggravate anyone again with a crooked horizon.

There is enough supply in the bank account for a 40D or a 30mm f4, but there isn't enough 'need' as of yet.

Keep in mind that I'm highly suggestible, so what am I forgetting? Maybe a CP to replace my Hoya that grenaded itself last week? Silverscoobie is hopefully hooking me up with a 10 stop ND, but maybe I need a set of graduated NDs? Maybe I need a 580ex, or some strobes, or modeling lights for the work studio?

I guess you'll probably want a jumping off point, so this is probably the only time you'll see me post a gear list:
    • 5D, with grid focus screen and 2 batteries, wired and wireless shutter releases
    • 350D, with battery grip and 4 batteries, wired shutter release
    • 12 gigs of CF cards
    • 10-22 EFs
    • 17-40 f4L
    • 24-70 f2.8L
    • 70-200 f2.8L IS
    • 50 f1.8
    • 1.4x tele, 2x tele
    • Kenko extension tubes
    • 430ex with demb diffusor
    • Lowepro stealth reporter bag and Canon backpack
    • manfrotto something or other tripod with 3d head
    • manfrotto monopod
    • RAM mount for the motorcycle
    • Impact 1500w continuous lighting setup with umbrellas and diffusers
    • light shed and assorted backgrounds for product shots

I'd get a new polarizer if your old one is borked. Personally I'd stick to multicoated filters and that 10 stop ND filter is not.

Not sure what else you really think you need, seems like you've got it all pretty well covered.

Actually since I asked about it in another thread, consider investing in custom plates & brackets for your lenses and bodies for that ball head since I think it uses the Arca Swiss style QR plate (if you get it with the QR adapter). That or you could get the mounting plate from Kirk or RRS.

Oops, forgot to mention, I do have another CP but I do like having 2 so I don't have to get my gummy fingers all over them when I switch lenses.

I don't really need any of it, hence me typing 'need'.

I did see the Arca with the quick-release and briefly considered it, but I don't really mind taking the 3 seconds to unscrew a normal screw. I can be swayed though.

I think my legs, head and all the plates cost more than your current B&H cart and it was 100% worth it. Does that sway you?

It's my tripod nirvana, and I had been pining over it for 4 or so years before I bought it summer of 06.

Hmmm, a little. I don't really feel anything missing in my tripod setup except that I've outgrown my 3d head and want something more convenient to use. Perhaps if I got to put my hands on something like what you have then it could seal the deal.

The L plate for the camera makes it 100% worth it too. Instead of flopping over your camera sideways off the tripods center, you just take the camera off and stick it back on, vertically.

The only change with the order I suggest is changing the shipping address to where I live.

Some say I'm a very generous person, I'd have to disagree.

I dunno, I don't keep up with all those stats. If you're headed where I think you're headed, I haven't outgrown my cameras so I don't think I 'need' a 1 series for a while.

Some are, some aren't. The 1D series is a 1.3x crop, the 1Ds series is full frame.

I think you need the 40d.

Did you initially jump straight from the 350 to the 5d?

    Ted,

A bit off-topic but thanks for letting me know what the stupid eye cup is called. I've been needing to buy a replacement for a while since I lost the one off my back-up long ago.

Hm, if I was shooting a lot of racing this year then I would totally agree. Don't get me wrong, it's definitely high on the list of things to get, but with my current schedule I don't really 'need' it right now. But things could change here shortly...

And yes, I went from the 350 to the 5D. I mainly use the 350 for work now, but I also take it to the races because of its extra reach.

The only way I found it was to find the 350 ad at B&H, then search accessories, then more accesories. And sorry I couldn't meet up with you last week, you're still my hero though.

No problem. We'll have plenty of chances.

And currently, you're my hero. So, we can just go ahead and get a room before anyone suggests it.

I don't think I have the correct mount for that lens. And it may be a 1200mm but at a constant f22 I can't imagine what I could possibly use it for.

Anyone else have any bright ideas? I'm going to have a few beers before submitting my order, so I'm only going to get more suggestible as the night progresses.

Lucky for me, I live way below my means. I'm not exactly sure why I'm so lucky.

So that's +2 for the Arca quick release and mounting plates. Hm, I'm not quite sold yet, but there's still time.

If you were going to do some race shoots maybe super fast CF card? Extreme IV? Not sure what your cameras max out at.

Good thinking, but as of now my CFs are faster than my cameras' write speeds. That may change once I upgrade bodies, but for now that's not something I 'need'.

I use an arca style head and have a couple quick release plates. I think it is the only way to go. Some day I will pick up an L plate as well.

can someone explain to me what multicoating a 10stop ND filter would do?

Not sure if theres any practical advantage, but the idea is that it would help stop internal reflections that cause flare, but at a .1% transmission rate Im not sure theres a point.

Call me a coating snob, but with the long exposure times you're still trying to result at an equivalent exposure. So if it takes 1/100th second to get a properly exposed image of a gray card it takes just as many photons to generate a properly exposed image of a gray card at the same ISO & Aperture through a 9 or 10 stop filter, it just takes longer to get there, resulting in likely similar effects from internal reflections.

Whether that's ever particularly significant is a separate issue but I find it easy enough to avoid uncoated or singly coated glass, so I prefer to do so as a "feel good" precautionary measure.
