So I have an older N70 Nikon SLR with a Sigma 28-80mm F3.5-5.6 Aspherical-Macro Lens.

1st question is this lens any good? 2nd if it is a half way decent lens would it work in something entry level like a Nikon D40?

I'm entertaining the thought of upgrading to an entry level DSLR, ideally if the lens would work on the D40 with good results than that would sway my desicion back to Nikon. If its garbage or wouldn't work, then I would probably end up with a Rebel XT.

    Any thoughts?

so you and Mrs Boobs would be a dual DSLR family?
    Nice!

IMHO that's not a bad lens, but it's not nice enough to make you guys own one canon and one nikon DSLR. I'd go with whatever system she has (canon right?) so you can share lenses.
    I own this joint!

I agree with Ben. It would be much easier (and make much more sense) for you both to have Canons, and share any lenses/gear you buy.

Thanks guys, that did cross my mind as well considering she will probably own more lenses down the road, I guess i just hate wasting stuff and aside from this lens and the kit lens I really dont see myself buying anything else for the D40.

Oh well she'll chime in shortly and remind me that I dont need to take up another hobby considering I have a project car that needs my time, money and effort.

EXACTLY!! You don't need to take up another hobby!! We have the fish, you have your car, I have my camera.

But if you do get another camera, then I get to get the flash I want.

I agree with everyone. Stay in the same system. You can share lenses and um, flashes too.

interesting idea with the "your own money" mr boobs....

but it's win win for both of you since you'd have less of a spousal road block with new toys.

Exactly, we make it pretty well known that we do not have a joint account. Her money is hers mine is mine, but we have an agreement that major purchases need to be discussed before hand.

Strange. I'm all for having separate accounts, but in addition to a joint account. I think everyone needs "unaccountable" money to avoid spousal aggro. Just so much stuff would be shared I would think it hard to keep spliting up everything. I mean do you still split the bill when you go out to dinner etc?

I agree with what everyone else said. For the record, that lens won't autofocus on a D40 since it doesn't appear to have HSM (built-in AF motor). It looks to even have a plastic bayonet mount, which would lead me to believe that isn't high enough quality to justify building a seperate system within your household.

    Whoa missed this thread

Don't recall if you've made a decision, but that's basically like a kit lens. Not a stellar performer but certainly nothing wrong with it for what it costs. It's not worth enough or good enough to make it worth the hassle of you owning a different camera system than Boobs, so I'd say don't use that lens to decide to stay with Nikon.

Funny, didn't realize this was bumped awhile ago. Anyway. For those that are interested I just bought a used Canon 20D. I got tired of trying to take pictures with my camera phone and looking like a retard trying to be creative with my pics.
