    Default  Rechargable batteries...

OK, so what are those new batteries with the better shelf life called? Enelopes or something? Anyone here have them? I have 2 420EXs and I need some newer rechargables. I have ~12 AA "power2000" batteries for them I picked up from B&H when I got the flashes, but they're ~5 years old and don't hold a charge very well right now... So they need to be replaced.

I'm just looking for suggestions on the current tech of rechargeable batteries for use with flashes. What do you have and how do you like them?

yarp. eneloop batteries are the best. i have 8 for my camera and love them, they're generally ~$15 for 4 so they're not cheap...but totally worth it.

oh and sanyo also makes the best quick charger(s) too

Yep, I love my Eneloops. I charge them about as often as I do the main battery in my camera.

I'm using a 15 minute Energizer charger I got with some Energizer batteries a while back. It works, but you can cook an egg on the batteries, it gets so hot. I'm looking for an alternative, as this can't be good.

I bought these Sanyo's in January to replace my dying Energizers

while they look different they are the same as these http://www.amazon.com/Sanyo-NiMH-Rec...7229229&sr=1-3

    They seem to work well.

As far as chargers go it seems people either go with the LaCrosse you referenced above or the Maha

    http://www.amazon.com/Maha-Powerex-M...7229278&sr=1-1

I went with the Maha and am pretty happy with it I guess. Works great for me since each bay charges seperately, the SB-800 flash has a 5th battery option.

Back when I was buying the Energizers I had picked up this kit http://www.amazon.com/Energizer-Rech...7229493&sr=1-6 and keep the quick charger in my big bag.

    ^ nice.

    I just ordered these:
    1 x 4pack AAA
    2 x 4pack AA
    La Crosse Charger

I probably should have bought 12 batteries but I figured what that cost was enough for right now. I have 2 flashes which take 4 each but rarely use them now, nevermind at the same time. So for now 8 will be plenty for the Wii and Flashes and whatever else, then if I feel the need for more for my flashes I'll pick them up later. It'll be nice to have working batteries for the flashes now though. I'm excited to see how the sanyo's work.

I ordered the eneloop set on amazon that has 8xAAs, 4xAAAs, C and D adapters and a 4 cell charger. It was like $40.

I want to get a good charger, but I don't know which.

That set is also nicely portable it looks like, and considering it's basically working out to be a free charger, I'll take it.

yeah, the one I got is a new version of the one that's supposed to be "the best". I would have gotten the old one in case they mucked something up in the update but it was ~$12 cheaper so I went with that. Plus it's black.

new version of the LaCrosse? The BC700 is another version of the BC900 but has fewer features, comes with less and costs less.

The Maha MH-C9000 looks really nice but at $70 it's a lot of cash I think for that. The LaCrosse BC900 looks nice, it comes with a case & batteries so more never hurts. Just don't use it at the higher charge rates apparently or it may meltdown

    Not sure which to get.

I have Powerex rechargable and they work great. Also, the charger will "condition" the batteries (charge, drain, slow charge) which keeps them fresh.

I just bought the LaCrosse BC900 charger & battery set from Thomas Distributing. They promise the newest version and having more batteries for other things (remotes, mouse, etc) will be nice since the eneloops will go in more demanding devices I think.

I just plan to avoid running it at the highest charging rates.

While waiting for the MH-C9000 to ocme out I purchased the MH-C204W and was told I could exchange it for a credit once the MH-C9000 came out. Unfortunately for me it got a little too close to the toaster oven one day and melted a corner of the casing so I decided to keep it and pass it on to the kids for thier multitude of battery needs. Good little charger.

I got scared using my 15 minute Energizer charger on my Eneloops. ~$60 seems fair for a quality charger and 16 batteries.

Eneloops are totally worth it. They last forever in your bag, and you don't end up with one randomly dying. I have a ridiculous number of them now, and I've never had one fail whereas I had my Energizers and Monster batteries randomly pooping out at very bad times.

If you can't find Eneloops locally, you can also look for Duracell Pre-Charged batteries, which are the same thing but re-branded. You will likely get ****ed cost-wise, it's a lot cheaper to go through B&H or Thomas Distributing.

As for AA/AAA chargers, the Maha/PowerEX MH-C9000 owns. It's only a 4 cell charger, but it has really detailed options for being able to bring ****ty batteries back to life (albeit temporarily), do slow charging or quick charging (which you should avoid), etc.

thanks for this, i was thinking just buy the charger that comes with the eneloops? or is that the same one mentioned above (i'll just check back to this thread when purchasing )

now do these rechargables last as long as normal lithium AA's?
just so i know how many i should buy.

Lithiums will definitely last a bit longer than the Eneloops since they're 3,000 mAh vs. 2,000 mAh. Lithiums are also nice and light.

i wasn't aware batteries had a big weight difference
perhaps i'll keep a set of lithiums for back up but otherwise use the eneloops.

i like that the lithiums last long for me, between 600 and 800 pictures, mostly 1/2 power or 1/1 power in the flash

Heh, when you've got 4 in the Flash and 8 in the pack on your back - believe me, you notice.

I use Energizer and Duracell rechargeables, 2700's I believe, they last for a long time. Are the Eneloops that much better? If so, how?

The Eneloops stay charged longer because they have a really low self-discharge rate. So you can charge them, leave them in a case for a while, come back and they'll still have a good charge. They're also more reliable in the long run. I've tried a lot of other batteries and I always have the problem of one battery out of four randomly dying - never had that problem with Eneloops.

No. But you can get Duracell "Pre-Charged", which are essentially the same thing. You'll save a ****ton of money if you buy from Thomas Distributing though. Buy a bunch at the same time since their shipping isn't exactly cheap...

Right. But shipping is about $8 from TD, so you'd have to buy a few, or maybe a charger to make it worth it.

Ended up getting some Duracell "Pre-Charged" for $12 at Target, which are just re-branded Eneloops. Too bad, my battery collection was so sleek looking.

    Why it's gotta be white!?
If it weren't for the last minute, nothing would get done.

Yeah, white and then with my white date/alpha tagging labels so I can keep track of the batches I get. I'm such a homo.

I've been meaning to get some more eneloops... I have 4 in my flash and 4 spares, but I want some for my wireless keyboard and mouse.

I had my first Eneloop scare this morning. Threw 4 into my charger that had been sitting in Wii remotes unused for possibly over a year. 3 of them charged up as expected, one refused to come up. I put the charger into "fix it" mode and it appears to be holding a charge, but... we'll see.
