Default  Does this look like a good deal? (Lens ?)

    I was wondering two things...

Does this look like a decent deal on this lens?

    http://www.amazon.com/dp/B0002ALDRC/...C&linkCode=asn

From what I can tell, it seems to be a reasonable price. Also wanting to know more about Sigma lenses in general. I guess I am just a tad bit scared to buy something that doesn't say Nikon on it. But I have heard good things about Sigma. This vendor seems to have good feedback, but I might just pay the extra $13 and wait for Amazon to have it in stock - I'm not in any uber hurry to get it. Thanks for any info!

    Welcome to the forum!

It's listed for $359 at sigma4less and $399 at B&H, so yeah $199 is a pretty good deal on it.
Plus it sound like people like it over at FM:
    http://www.fredmiranda.com/reviews/s...&cat=37&page=1

it's gets an 8.9 average rating to the 24~70mm f/2.8 EX DG's 8.3. I had the 24~70mm and it was a great lens, so the fact this is ranked better says good things. The only down side to it I can see it the range is short (shorter than the 24~70mm which is already considered short by some). But it's a constant aperture zoom which is great, so I don't really see how you'd lose out. And at that price you could sell it used for what you paid for it.
    I own this joint!

Well, that's pretty much the info I was looking for. I had already read good things about it, just wanted to hear it from some people I was slightly more comfortable with!

Now, the wait begins....I hate waiting for stuff to be shipped to me!!! Thanks.

    Cat,

Foist of...welcome to the forums, young lady .
I'd buy that lense, if I were you, great deal. But then, you knew I would say so...

If it were above $300, I'd lean towards the 24-70, due to the extra range. But at that price, who cares.
Another lense that is quite highly regarded is the Sigma 17-70, which is a little wider, but still takes great shots.

DGs are designed with digital in mind or some crap like that... Basically DGs have a new fancy coating on the lens, but work on all sensors... DCs are designed for the smaller sensors....

Yeah, I've got the body and the lenses for the Nikkormat. Plus a flash, some filters, and a teleconverter. I love that camera, it's just so much more difficult to shoot film these days - I am all about instant gratification. I wish I could have used some of the same lenses, but of course, the mount is different. Oh well!

    Ummm, yeah, I've got a Nikkor 24mm f/2.8 I'm using on my 5D
Not sure if the same adapter would work on the nikkormat, but it's another Nikon brand so I'm not sure why it wouldn't...

Where do you live? I'd love to try them and let you know. Or you could just wing it, order the adapter and give it a try... Could you get some pictures of the mount end of the lens? If so I could at least try to guesstimate if it would work or not.

Here's my 5D with a Olympus on it:

that's the 24mm nikkor in front.

This lens is not mine, but I have this lens and this shows the mount for my Nikkormat Lenses...

And this is basically my camera, except mine is in way better condition and has a hot shoe mount.

I knew there were adapters out there, but hadn't really thought about going that far to be able to reuse my lenses. Also, I live in Texas (far) but would love it if someone local, or anywhere I suppose, would want to try them out.

That lens looks very VERY similar to what I'm using. I'd buy an adapter and give it a try. They're <$50, but I did have to modify a part of the lens on my Nikkor I bought... It wouldn't go on the canon with a tab on the back... So I dremelled it off, but I'm not sure what that does to it's usability on a nikon now...

Take pictures of the camera end of your lenses when you get a chance and I'll see what mine look like in comparison.

OK, that raised lip on the top of the lens mount may give you issues. Can you set the lens down on something and take another picture across the end of the lens? I need to see how far it sticks up. Also which body do you have? I think my 5D has more issues with that than other bodies.

I'll take some more pics tonight. You can sorta tell a bit more what it looks like looking at the teleconverter pic I posted. But yeah, I figured it might not be as easy as I was hoping. Also, as far as camera body, I have a Nikon D40. Thanks for the help!

Well crap, I didn't realize you were using Nikon... It should either go on and work, or it won't...

I'm using mine on a canon body... Weird I know, but it's their mount design that lets it work... It all comes down to the spacing...

Yeah, between the two, the mounts aren't anything alike. That's OK, though, I still use the 'mat for some stuff, but mostly stick to digital. I guess I should hav mentioned what camera I use, I just thought since the link was for a Nikon lens... Don't worry, though, I won't leave your forumz.

Take everything that I'm about to say with a grain of salt, because I have seen old Nikkormats and Nikon's with MF lenses (my dad has a bunch from the 60s and 70s), but I don't have lots hands-on experience with them.

That being said, generally, all Nikon lenses should fit on all Nikon bodies, since they all have the same "F" mount. While the lens you have may fit on the D40, it may require some modification to work at all, and definitely won't meter or autofocus (I know, your lens isn't AF, but I'm speaking generally here).

You will probably find this page more helpful than my educational guesses: http://www.kenrockwell.com/nikon/compatibility-lens.htm This guy is the subject of much derision on internet forums, some of it well deserved, but he does give good reviews of both Nikon and more recently Canon gear. His pictures aren't great and he's kind of a tool, but he does have some good information.

I hope that is helpful to you!

Yeah, I'll probably just go ahead and use the two cameras with their own lenses, considering I have most of the same lenses for both anyway. I can share filters, though, which is nice, because I have a bunch of old ones I want to play around with before I think about getting new ones for the digi.
