Default  which cheap wireless remote for canon?

OK, I've been meaning to get one of these for a while now, but greg's thread reminded me.....

    What types does anyone have?
    I've found 3 available now:
    http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/Wireless-Remot...QQcmdZViewItem
    http://www.dealextreme.com/details.dx/sku.5549
    http://www.gadgetinfinity.com/produc...cat=285&page=1

all have been suggested here. I actually really like the sound of one from that first eBay store, but they've run out of the newer version and are only selling the old version now? (R6E now, the better newer one is the R7E). Normally I wouldn't care too much, but that R7E has a better range than all of them and uses batteries that are easier to find/replace (AAAs) which would be nice. Anyone have any of the 3 I linked too and use them with any success? I think Ted has the gadget infinity right?

    Thoughts?

    another option:
    http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll...X:NEWLIST#LIST

it's basically the same as the first ebay link but it's in $ instead of pounds. Both work out to be ~$40 shipped which is more than the gadget infinities, but these have lights on the front so you know when they're focused... Not sure if that matters but I like the looks of these better....

How much was shipping from Gadget infinity ted?

Yeah, it works ok. The only time I really tried to use it was on a hill country ride where I had my camera perched up 30' overlooking a long hairpin turn. I was trying to get a shot of myself flying through the corner but either it kept turning itself off before I got there, I couldn't properly mash the button with gloves on, or it just didn't trigger the shutter, so I just couldn't get the shot. I tried 5 or 6 different passes, but after turning around a mile down the road (only place that was safe), parking the bike and taking off gloves/helmet, and climbing up and scrambling back down to check the camera, I grew too hot and frustrated. I haven't tried to use it since, but it worked fine in the test shots where I was just standing there.

w00t, got it in the mail last night!

looks and works well. I went with this version because it also works as a wired remote, and honestly I just liked the look of this one a bit better. I picked it up from this guy on eBay.

What is the issue with a cabled release? These seem really bulky.

cable releases have cables... when you can't use that, or need ~5' of distance this is much easier than a 5' cable. If you need distance and are willing to own multiple remotes, then yes a cabled remote is much easier a lot of the time, but if you want JUST ONE remote, then this is a pretty good alternative because it works close up AND far away.

Also, skip the wireless portion (use just the part in the hotshoe) and it IS a wired remote. The coiled cable and hotshoe mount are actually quite nice as it keeps it from dangling.

That said I have 3~4 remotes I've collected over the years? This one, the timer remote (time lapse, timed shots etc) a normal one I hacked to take extensions and then one older one that I think won't work with DSRLs (it's from my A2E, I found it a few months ago). They each serve their own purpose, so they're worth having.

Just ordered one as well. I was just going to hack my RS-60E3 to work with the 20D's N3 connector but for C$50 this looks like a good solution.

This is where you step in with your eight-month update and say it is, in fact, a piece of crap.

nope, still works fine. But as I said where ever shawn asked, I have 3 remotes I currently use, so it's not like I'd wear any one out.

For sheezy. The only thing that kinda made me iffy on the purchase was the hotshoe connection that would preclude using my ST-E2 at the same time, until I realised that (obviously) it's not a functional connection of any kind.

yeah, you can just dangle it, it's just the hotshoe bit makes it nice. When would you use both though?

plus, if you REALLY needed to you could use one of these:

but then you'd need a PC jack to hotshoe adapter to put the ST-E2 in so it'd still see the connection...

Ben, is your still working well?

Also will it do continuous shots? I know you hold the remote down for 3 seconds to go to bulb mode (remote light turns off, but receiver light stays red). But if you have it set to 1/10" will it just keep firing them off?

I assume there is no way to set the corded remote part to always on?

well I went to use this the other day and the remote's battery was dead.
    just got new batteries tonight.

anywho, provided the batteries work, it works very well. It's got a switch on the remote. The top function is a normal release mode (it's got a B and the /// for burst). In that mode, if you hold it down, it fires a sequence if the cameras setup for it. If you're in bulb mode, that works too. You have to hold it for more than ~2 seconds, then it'll stay open w/o holding it... there's a light on the remote, basically, once it's OUT you're done holding until you want it to stop the exposure, then you press again. If you want a bulb of <2 seconds you just press....hold....release and that works too. The lower function on that switch is timer mode, but NOT the cameras timer mode.... The remote times the delay itself (seems like 3ish seconds?).

Basically, in the top mode it's your shutter button. It has working half press (which does whatever you've set your shutter to do, ie you want AF you have to adjust your CFs so it's on your shutter) and does bulb as well as bursts. The timer mode is cool I guess but if you need a timer the cameras would probably work.

    Cool. That's what I thought.

I wish the wired release/receiver had a hold button. Maybe I'll just add a switch.

I see the receiver takes a CR2, what does the transmitter take?

I highly doubt it's fake. I've never had a single issue with any Yongnuo product purchased through DealExtreme. It'll be the same product from eBay.

I just placed an order for it, a knock off gorillapod slr zoom, bubble level, and lenspen. All for under $40. It will take about 2 weeks to get here, but I can wait.

I'm going to see if I can add a bulb switch to the receiver part.

The big ass coil would irritate the **** out of me since I'd never use it wired. I have one of the Phottix remotes for the D700, which are pretty much as compact as possible. The receiver is so light I usually just let it dangle from the camera. You can get the same remote for Canon.

Well I got hosed by DealExtreme. It appears they sent me someone else's order. Now I get to wait some more

    My Order:
    Ben's Wireless Shutter Release
    10" Gorillapod SLR Zoom
    Lenspen
    Hot Shoe Bubble Level

    What Arrived:
    Two of These

    One of These

That gum is CRAZY. Just gave it a test since the packaging slid on and off. Major amperage.

Too bad on the back of my package there were my ordered items SKUs and all were checked off.

That being said, their return process is pretty interesting so far. You fill out a claim with your SKUs, a picture of the items received, and pictures of the front and back of the package. They have yet to reply yet, but hopefully my stuff will ship out soon.

Hopefully I get to keep the shocking gum

Well my wireless release showed up today (actually yesterday, but I had to get it from USPS). This thing really IS small.

Mine doesn't have a coiled cord, just a short straight one. And the transmitter doesn't have an antenna.

Have not hooked it up to the camera yet, but it appears to work as advertised.
