Default  What do you think of this for a starter??

    http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...-E0-_-30120070

Hubby showed me this one today...it seems pretty nice, the reviews are good. Do ya'll think this is a good deal and a decent camera for me to upgrade to? Keep in mind I am nowhere near professional nor will I ever be, but for someone that wants to become a hobbiest (sp?) of sorts, would this be a good body to start with?

    Thanks!

    click the link then?

It's the top online selling photo store from NYC. They are not the type that rips you off, they've been in the city with a real (awesome) store forever. If you ever pick up a photo mag, they're the store with the green tipped ads in the back. They have AWESOME catalogs for free, awesome prices, and no hassles. (most NYC online stores have no store, and have super low prices until you try to actually buy something for that price, it won't include any of the accessories! plus they don't have a storefront anyway.) B&H also now has one of the best equipment sites for finding specs on things and looking stuff up.

The 2nd link, the one that you said came with lens and 2gb memory, doesn't actually come with the memory. So I would have to buy memory anyways. The newegg link comes with the memory, lens, and *gasp* a digital picture frame!!

I'm still not sure if I'm ready to bite the bullet on this, but at least I know I'm looking at the right kind of camera. I'll poke around B&H some more.

    Thanks guys!!!

Wow, new eggs layout blows, I couldn't even tell that link had the frame until you mentioned it...
and sorry about my links, I added the camera & lens & card and it is more, $702. newegg isn't horrible so you can buy from them to save the money. If the frame sucks you could always sell it.

Yeah, hubby is a newegg junkie... He gets just about everything electronic related from them.

I definitely think I'll be going with that body, and definitely want a "kit" that comes with lens, memory, etc. I just don't think we're going to do it today. But like I said, at least I know I'm looking at the right things.

Just one tip - don't waste your money on the kit lens. There are many better choices out there in the same price range.

For $80? Like what? I don't think the kit lens is near as bad as people make it out to be. I've used it and produced some nice shots of similar quality to those from my 17-70 Sigma. And, I had my 17-70 Sigma and a 17-40 L side-by-side for a few weeks, I chose to keep the 17-70. So, by that first-hand experience with all three lenses in a similar focal range, the 18-55 is just fine in my opinion. Especially considering how cheap it is. The only issue is the build quality blows, but I don't think that affects IQ, so what does it matter for a beginner?

For one, the 50 comes immediately to mind (or some alternative, like Ben found), two, the lens can be bought new for $60 when not part of a kit (that's a spare CF card right there), three, a Sigma 24-70, four, a Canon 75-300... and dunno, there might be a lens or two from Tamron, Quantaray, etc. that would fit the bill.

Why demean my post? Just like you I'm stating an opinion.

I really appreciate all the input ya'll have offered. I personally won't be chomping down on this one just yet...but I won't stop my husband if he wants to. I'll just cross my fingers and hope for a nice x-mas or anniversary gift.

I don't know too much about lenses and whatnot at the moment. Believe me when I say I am a super-noob. I really just wanted to know if I was looking at a good camera body for someone like me to start out with. I have read mixed reviews about the lens that comes with the kit, but the problem is that all I've heard con-wise is that it's just not a good lens. Nobody ever goes into specifics when reviewing. What exactly is bad about it?

If you dont know to much about lenses, start with the kit, its really not too bad. Ive gotten some great images with it and its a decent starter focal range. As MK said, the 50mm 1.8 is another great alternative, but you would have to decide if you would prefer the 18-55 range or prime 50. But thats up to you.

    Agreed with Matt.
That lens isn't technically as good as other lenses that are available. Most of those other lenses cost more, or a lot more so it's a pretty good starter lens. It certainly won't stop you from getting good photos as you learn, and great images as you get better. It's also nice and light which is a huge plus when you first get into DSLRs. You don't want to not take the camera because it's too big/bulky... With proper technique it works very well and there are some awesome shots out there from it. There are also a lot of craptacular shots, but I think that's because it's a n00b lens, so it's the person behind the lens quite often. Then upgrade it thinking it's the problem so not a lot of people get good while they still have it.

I highly recommend the 50mm f1.8 or any other lens that is a prime (fixed FL) and has a maximum aperture of f2.0 or wider (smaller number, ie f/1.8, f/1.4, f11.2 or f/1) because these will teach you composition and how DOF works in a hurry. The kit lenses max aperture isn't all that wide, so it makes low light shooting hard w/o using the flash (for creative type stuff) and it's harder to get thin DOF with it. The 50mm f1.8 is ~$75 new, you can get them used for around $50. It's the best learning tool out there IMHO. If you don't like the 50mm end (play with the 18-55 for a while first) then you can get fast primes in other FLs, but they cost a bit more ($100~$300 depending). I love my fast primes for when I'm in a creative rut.

Apologized on any accounts of demeaning your post, I re-read it, it came off wrong.

Anyways, to continue the discussion in a more respectful manner...

    1) I own the 50mm and love it. But its not the same lens as the 18-55. I'm not sure what the OP wants to shoot, but having that wide-end would certainly make landscapes much easier. I know landscapes can be shot with a 50mm, but 80mm (after the crop) is an awfully long landscape lens.

    2) The lens costs $140 new from BH outside of a kit.

    3) The Sigma 24-70 costs $429, I don't think that should be in the same discussion unless I'm missing something. Same with the Canon 75-300, thats a $200(ish) lens which is fine if you have the extra $$.

My whole point is that for a beginner, with their first body just learning/playing with photography, the Canon 18-55 is a perfectly good lens and I really don't understand why it gets such a bad rap. I've shot with it, I've looked at the results, and its just fine. My Sigma 17-70 and the Canon 17-40 were both slightly sharper, but one costs 5x as much and the other costs almost 9x as much, so they should be. By saying there are better lenses out there for $80 with a kit, you're kind of comparing apples to oranges to me, anything better is either a different type of lens or much more expensive.

Personally, if I were OP, I'd try to get both the 18-55 and the 50mm for around $140 total. Like everyone else in this thread has said, the 50mm f/1.8 will teach all sorts of stuff. Its a great learning tool and doubles for some kick ass portraits.

    Cool mang.

The lens is sold for ~$60 by many people who buy the kit, but don't even unpack the kit lens. Of course I wasn't talking about the 24-70 f/2.8; Sigma makes 24-70 F/3.5-5.6 for about $100. The kit lens is ok (I'd like to know how many hundreds of thousands if not millions Canon has sold) and a lot of its drawbacks can be mitigated by stopping down, shooting RAW, and using corrective software, I just think there are better choices out there.

I agree that having both the kit lens and the 50 would be a good combo, it just comes down to how much Luckie has to spend.

The original kit with the digital frame and CF card had disappeared shortly after I originally posted. However, it's back, it's $30 cheaper, and hubby has decided that it's safe to pull the trigger. And, to make things even cooler...I should have it in time for the NSOP New England shoot#2 next weekend! So (some of) you guys get to help me make some of my very first shots!!

    GAH I'm so excited!

    + on top of that

I could have saved myself another $30 if I waited one more day and convince my wife to get the Black Body 400D

Ok, trying to find the 50mm 1.8f that Matt was trying to sell me on and I can't find it! I tried B&H and maybe I'm blind, but all I saw similar was a 60mm 2.8f lens.

Also, looking at UV filters and have NO idea what to get...

    Help?

    don't bother with a UV...
    and here it is:
    gray, $69.95
    USA $74.95

the difference is the warranty. Spend the extra $5 in this case.

    I searched for "canon 50mm f1.8" btw.
You'll get used to what you have to search for after using B&H's site for a while. It is tricky at first.

    And Leah, blank post?
    I own this joint!
