    Default  40d w/ or w/o 'kit' lens

My fiancee again is awesome, and asked to get info on which camera I want.

So I showed her the 5d

But then I showed her the 40d, with and without the kit lens. I'm not sure if I'll want the lens or not.

I'm thinking when I get the cam I'll possibly sell the rebel off to somebody, and with it I can sell off a kit lens or something. The lens that comes with the 40d kit seems to be as good or better than any of my current mid-zoom lenses.

I've got 18-55mm kit lens & a 28-80 usm lens, neither are great, and neither have IS. I think for the roughly $140 more the kit lens will cost me it may be worth it, especially since it will fill in inbetween my 10-20 and the 70-200 that I may or may not be getting for xmas

    Discuss.

...yes, but did you show her the 5D with the 24-105 kit lens?

its the 28-135mm 3.5-5.6 USM IS

The longer range of the lens would be taken by the 70-200 that I hope to be getting soon, and I'd be missing the 20-28mm range if I sold all my other lenses. Longer term I'm thinking I want to get the 24-70L since I've heard and seen that its really great.

On amazon right now - body only is $1240, w/lens is $1404.

She's supportive, but not quite 5D supportive, yet. I did tell her that the 40d will be a great upgrade for me now and after a year or two something like the 5D would be great.

I rather like the 28-135 IS, Its a much better kit lens IMO, fantastic walk around lens during the day.

It seems like it'd be useful, I think I'm leaning towards asking for that.

its really a win-win, because if I don't like it looks like I can get at minimum $250 for it.

The front element is the standard L 77mm, so any filters and such are easily transferred. I just find it a convenient focal range for most shooters. And since you have the 10-20, its a great one stop replacement for the kit and your 28-80.

I used to have the 28-135... I loved it. Damn fine lens. It just wasn't wide enough for me on a cropped body. But yeah 28-135 > 18-55 fo sure.

24-70L is my favorite lens, 99% of the time its on the 30D..

Used 5Ds are on the cheap and slowly getting cheaper, Ive seen them with <10k acutations for $1700s

One deciding factor is the fps of the 40d vs. the 5d. I like to shoot sports/rallying occasionally and while I don't want to quite go to a 1d or whatever I like hte 6.5 of the 40d.

Thats been my big debate between the three as well, I really like the 5fps on the 30D, the 3 on the XTi and 5D are just not fast enough. However im leaning more towards the 5D as Ill still have my 30D. So if I need those burst moments, I just switch cameras. Id really like FF for wider shots, So I think the 5D with the 24-70 and the 30D with the 70-200 is going to be next years setup.

Another reason to consider the 40D if you intend to do any sports/action is the 1.6 crop... on a 5D, you'd have to get much more expensive glass, or suffer the aberrations introduced by a 1.4x or 2X TC. Having tried sports with a 5D I can tell you it's just too damn slow.

I never really get to shoot any rallies though, just participate in them.

I'd guess that if I went to England I'd end up spectating a lot.

I'd go for the K100D with 18-250mm lens.

I'm not gonna switch from canon at this point, I'll stick with it.
